Challenge: Painting with Light (Advanced Editing I)
Collection: Macro
Camera: Sony DSC-F707
Location: kitchen
Date: Jan 25, 2004
Aperture: na
ISO: 100
Shutter: na
Galleries: Still Life, Macro
Date Uploaded: Jan 25, 2004

Four sea shells and my 2yo's fisher price flashlight, don't remember the aperture, 30 sec. exposure.

Cropped, resized,NeatImage (a touch) submitted. No other editing done.

edit -- I might have adjusted the contrast a smidge, but I don't think so.

It looked wonderful on my lcd, and pretty good on my computer, but the aforementioned 2 yo likes to "adjust" the monitor, and I think the contrast/brightness may be off. We'll see.

Good use of black space, interesting subjects - somehow I thnk the shot needs more punch

the position of the shells is bothersome to me in this ....Don't know why needed too lok out of place....the top right one, that is. The lighting is quite good as is the detail and focus. if the crop was not so tight you might have gotten away with this placement of the shells

Maybe a little more light would have made it pop.

Pretty light. I'm not crazy for the composition. I hope this does well, it's really very nice.

Another good picture but will add the comments I have put on some others in this category.
My only concern is, as you may have guessed from the amount of discussion on the forum re "painting with light" is whether it is painting with light.
Having been lucky enough to judge what is now a few hundred competitions in the last 30 years I feel I should say the first thing that happens is that they are sorted and any that do not immediatly seem to fit the category are dumped (hard but a fact). This is why so many competitions also run an "open category". Your picture, as impressive as it is, would, I feel have been rejected at this stage. "Painting with Light" has a fairly tight definition in photography but still allows a lot of lattitude for creativity.
I suspect that your scores may not reflect what the picture is worth which is a great shame. I believe if I was judging in another category I would have gone for an 8 .
I do hope you understand my reasons for marking it down
David

The black background adds a bit of sterility against the shells.
