I am not sure but this appears to be a mule deer, I have occasionally have seen them grazing in washouts and naturally shielded areas in small herds, they are bigger and slower, maybe a bit less common than whitetail.

Prairie colours and curious whitetail - beautiful. This appears a mule deer, but I am not sure.

I am enjoying & finding your SD gallery very interesting. Congratulations for your contribution and good work at Rosebud.
Considering the amount of snow in SD, and the often high amount of accumulation, I have always been amazed at the low number of snow plows.

".............the alarming rate of alcoholism and teen age suicides at this reservation." This is an understatement, & not new. To an extent a social inequity, or an inadequacy of cultures to compromise, but nothing less than a national disgrace. It is a phenomena which has continued for decades.
Your picture, brings me sadness & memories of my relatively small amount of time teaching on a reservation, and the many, many, many beautiful former native students who have died this way. I have lost count of the number those young that I knew who have died. There is no single answer nor no simple solution. This kind of death represents the result of frustration, unobtainable opportunity, dismal, limited & inadequate resources encountered by native youth at many rural reservations.

Roadside markers are very interesting to me too - I hope I never have cause to place one.

It's good to see those smiles; evidently you haven't worn them out with relentless shooting to the point they ignore you when you get the camera out. Oh wait... that's me and my kids. What a way to start out a month of being inspired!

hey anni .. you'v captured the sense of loss with your photograph .. the flowers and especially the tins ..
we have a few sights around where i live, that arent the graves, but where the young ppl died .. from car accidents .. they have one down the road which has been maintained for over a year .. they have those collapsible seats and flags and flowers and other stuff ... memories .. :)
suicide is a big one too .. ppl just give up .. i know the feeling .. :)
