Oh my goodness, your description and this picture made me think of the first verse of "Mad World", recorded (in its current incarnation -- I think it was originally a Tears for Fears song) by Gary Jules. Are you familiar with it? The verse and chorus are as follows:

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny
I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very mad world

The funny thing is, I thought of the song just looking at the picture (how symbolic is that "Way Out" sign? wow), before I even read your description. It's a fabulous image, really really evocative and atmospheric, and I think it would be great for the street photography challenge. I promise not to friend-vote if you enter it. :)

Keep on telling those people Good Morning -- maybe you'll start a cheeriness revolution.

OK, for some reason that just made me get a little verklempt. I am unclear as to why. Maybe because of the 'close to a memorable day with my little girl who's growing up' nature of this shot, I don't know. I think it's definitely a keeper for you.

The picture in and of itself is of course very nice as well. Nice perspective, contrast, sharpness, and I like the way the border ties into the main subject.

That is a fascinating background for this shot. (Yes, we have pawnbrokers here; is there a kind of shady reputation associated with pawnshops in the UK? There is in the US, overall.)

And can I just be all ugly-American here for a minute and fawn over Britishisms? I love the names you all give your streets. "Hatton Garden" is very cool. (My all-time favorite Britishism is "strait-waistcoat" for straitjacket. AWESOME.)

I really like the graininess of the image and the lens flare also. Now, I don't know much about the Vivitar, but dslr's aren't all they're cracked up to be. Take a look at some of my images ;)

One more thing, you being friendly to the people reminds me of Will Ferrell in "Elf" when he got to Manhattan.

Great street photography... now go back and get something for the challenge. And just to BE a rebel, use the vivitar and submit the photo.

This is a really great shot & the story makes it even cooler & very interesting. When you were takling about the pawnshop & then said you had the camera I got scared for a second that you were going to bring it in the pawnshop...ah! :)

Interesting composition. The three balls against the "For Rent" signs -- it tells us something about the neighborhood.

There used to be several pawn brokers where I live, but now we only have one, and he doesn't have nearly as interesting a sign, and he seems to deal a lot in used stereos, used DVD's, and old electric guitars. Interesting that Redjulep reports that pawnshops are thriving in Arizona. I guess we Californians are busy putting our souls in hock to Visa and MasterCard.

Very interesting notes, Jon. Thanks for sharing.
