You recovered very nicely. I don't know why the previous commenter saw a green cow, I don't.

When I looked at the after image, my eye was drawn to the blur around the cow's right ear... where you cloned out the tree. At first glance I didn't recall there was a tree there and I assumed this was a case of Gaussian blur going wrong when bumped against an edge. I tried such things and always end up with an obvious blur ring around the non-blurred subject. However, I am not sure that is what happened here because I don't see the same thing on the other ear.

In any case, nice job.

I had to take your original and just color correct it to see what you'd really done. I like the cross processed, high contrast look. It makes a simple cow edgy and arty. I'm not sure whether or not I like the fact that the cow is now green, but I'm also not sure if the cross processed look would work with a cow colored cow.

I think it would have done considerably better than 5.7, although there's always the contingent that votes bugs down. I'd have given it at least a 7. I absolutely love the sharpening job you've done. It's just the right sharpness in the right places.

Love this image - it's so intriguing and surreal. Love the effect you achieved by using several photos and layering them. The sharpness is unreal.

This is one of those shots I probably would have pegged for a lost cause when I saw the original, but you've done an amazing job with it! The bright complimentary colors, the details in the strand of drops, and the sharpness of the main drop where you can see the reflection of the world are all right on. Very nicely done!

It looks like you have been on the fire trail with your macro lens again. I don't think it would have done so well in the free study either, mostly because even though it is very clear and sharp, a little more DOF to get that left antenae and right front leg in focus would have made it a little better. Emotions seem to get involved with the voting if you post something that makes most people a little uncomfortable to see due to conditioning, and that results in lower scores sometimes too. I feel that you made a good decision.

You did a nice job with your magic bag of processing tricky stuff to get it from the original to the finished shot. The tiny details like the toothy edge of the mandible make it interesting to see. Thanks for putting the processing details in with the image.
Life gets exciting for a while when you stir up a big nest of these little critters.

Well, it certainly is amazing. It is hard to predict what score are forthcoming in challenges. I, for one, would be perfectly happy with a 5.7. :)
