The light on the front of he face and shoulder is very nice, drawing the outlines. But in my view the transition from light to dark is too harsh for the shape of her face and then the light from the left is too strong again. Rather then a light (or reflector) from the left I think a slight reflection from the direction of the camera could have filled in some too strong shadows and emphasised the round shape of her cheeks and face.

Thank you for the comment Mariuca! Mea culpa! )). In my defense I can only say that I was not going for mystery here. It was an attempt on parody and stilization of old classical still lives like the one I linked here that were extremely detailed and 'technical".

I missed voting on this challenge.

I would love to leaf through the book even if I cannot read it. Such a beauty.
To me it lacks some air around it and it looks so very sharp, especially the detail of the velvet who mimics too much the detail of the worn cover. Could be my monitor though.

i love books .. especially old ones .. i can rarely stop myself putting one to my nose and drawing in that wonderful scent .. i bet this book smelt delicious .. !! ..
my only disappointment is that i dont know what the book is about ..
300 years old .. would transport the reader to another time and place .. very different to the one we are in now ..
having said that .. many ideas that ppl had years and years ago survive to this day as wonderful insightful and meaningful texts . take Cicero (106-43 BC) "gratitude is not only the greatest of virtues, but the parent of all others."

actually, I don't really know, maybe this book is even older, 300 years was my conservative estimate :). This is a Russian religious text of some sort (not a Bible) that has several front pages missing, so I don't know neither the title nor the year. It is beautifully hand-written in the old Cyrillic alphabet (half-Greek).

thanks for the info Lev .. :)
