This looks like the opening sentence of a charming tale, place and atmosphere set out for the reader. It's that feeling of unfolding, from particular to the unknown fog of the outcome. It's a very enjoyable image, and the square format is quite cleverly utilized. I find the lamp a bit distracting, but that's just a subjective quibble, and that's how the scene appears.
