I thinks that a closer crop would have helped here. I feel that the flags aren't extremely vital to the piece, and seem like "patriotic" filler. (please don't take that negatively.) A nicer, closer and crisper view of the Veterans would have been great to see.

I'm afraid that I find this shot poorly exposed, not framed very well, taken from too great a distance, and out of focus. In essence, a very mediocre snapshot.

Technical aspects aside, while firefighters *do* do heroic deeds everyday, this shot doesn't do a lot to invoke that heroism in my eyes.

The backlighting would be more effective in this photo, in my opinion, if the sun were further below the horizon, and not causing such a hash, and painful, blowout. I feel there is also too much negative space at the bottom of the image, which takes away from the shot compositionally. A little more room left on the right hand side would have helped as well.

I just don't feel that this is a very strong photograph, in technique, presentation, or story. Focus is soft, depth of field is off (back focused on the child, but leaving the "hero" our of focus), contrast is low causing a flat look, and there's just no real kick to the composition.

I understand that dogs have been heroic in the past, and some will be heroic in the future, but a shot like this, in a challenge of this type, does not say "heroes" to me.

This photograph shows a lot of creativity.. but no real connection to "heroes" in my book.

I'm just not getting a strong connection to the "hero" part of the challenge with this photograph. The harsh lighting (from flash?) and the shadows detract.

I think there's too much negative space at the top of this photo. Less space at the top, and the 640 height would have helped bring the stadium into a far better focus.

Pretty funny, and great expression. Focus seems a little soft though.

This is a nice photograph, but not a very strong connection to the challenge. I realize that the description mentions "personal heroes", but I personally need to feel more connection with the "hero" and less with the "personal"
