Hey pixelpig, don't beat yourself up. Image is great. If you are looking for comments to change things a little, my only suggestion would be to crop more out on the right and slightly more on the bottom. Go for a very tight crop to eliminate some more of that black. Your intended focus seems to be the center of the flower. That crop would move it even more so to the center and bring the stamen forward. IMHO

Almost looks like a painting. Hey. You were encouraged to experiment and experiment you did. My only comment is that I would like the background top left as dark as bottom right.
