Day 12 - Weedus Deadciduous by colorcarnivalComment: Terrific photo -- I like how the darks and lights in the background give the impression of depth. The way the light hits the dry leaves in front really makes them stand out. Lots of good shades of brown, and overall a very good composition. Good job! |

50Day02: Entranceby citymarsComment: Originally posted by jonfrommk: ... sorry to be a pain with all these questions but can you tell me what rent stabilised means |
In NYC, rent stabilization is one form of rent regulation. Unlike rent control, which used to guarantee a tenant's rent could not be raised, rent stabilization puts a percentage cap on how much the rent can be raised each year.
As you can imagine, there is a big battle between landlords and tenants over the future of rent regulation. The laws are slowing changing to favor the landlords: new apartments are never subject to rent regulation, while the old apartments that are stabilized are becoming a thing of the past. Once a certain monthly rent is reached on an apartment, it is automatically removed from rent stabilization restrictions. So with each new lease, the landlord can raise the rent to "market value" or whatever he feels he can get.
That is why they say there will eventually be no middle class in Manhattan: there will be subsidized housing for the poor (e.g., projects), and the rest will go to those who can afford to pay the exorbitant rents. |

50Day03: NW Office Viewby citymarsComment: Originally posted by jonfrommk: ... Are those blocks resi or commercial? Any idea of the cost per sq ft (if comm) or price (if resi) ... |
Hi, Jon. I don't mind the questions, but I have NO idea about prices. I'm fairly certain these are all residential buildings, though businesses of some kind may be planned for the street level spaces.

Day No. 10by GermaineComment: Very cool colors. It's funny how the glass seems to tilt to the right, yet the "horizon line" of the step appears to be straight.
I thought for sure you had set this up. Great that this was a "find." |

Day 11by hajekaComment: Looks like the Thera-Flu stuff I taken when I have a bad cold. I find it very soothing and not a bad taste at all.
Sorry you are sick. Feel better soon!

day 10 - look, mom! no hands!by rachelellenComment: Shutter: 1/50sec -- I usually use 1/60, but then I haven't done many of these. I'll have to try it your way, as mine don't turn out so well!
Thanks for the story. I'll bet you have nice kids. The trouble with telling kids not to grow up too fast is that it never makes sense until you are over the hump and trying to slow down. Same as it ever was, I guess.

day 9 - unraveling.jpgby rachelellenComment: That's a really nice story, and one of my favorite photos in your 50-day portfolio so far. Excellent "red on red" (or maroon-on-maroon) shot. Very sharp at the focal point and good use of DOF.
I'm definitely a pack-rat, so I can identify with keeping things long beyond their usefulness.
