I have a tendency to hang onto objects that have sentimental value long after I should have let them go.

This sweater, for example, is one that I bought in the first year of my marriage, when I was 19 or maybe 20 -- thirteen years ago. It's (uh, it was) a very heavy maroon cotton cabled hip-length behemoth of a sweater, and I think it went out of fashion about five minutes after I first put it on (because that's just how I roll). I wore it for several years anyway (again with the how I roll), through three pregnancies and sundry other events, until about five years ago when I got tired of it. Yet, because it dates from that early period of my marriage, I have been unable to make myself get rid of it.

However, now that we face the very real possibility of having to move everything we own (which is... a lot), suddenly the value of things changes a bit. I was going to throw the sweater away (it has a big run in the back so it's not something I could give away to anyone even if anyone would want it otherwise), but I decided to try my hand at reclaiming the yarn, to make dishcloths from it. There may well be a time in the near future (thanks David for the reminder :-P) when I won't have the money to support my yarn habit, and I'd be glad to be able to pull out something free and make something useful out of it.

See how far I've come? Now, instead of moving a five-pound sweater, I'll be moving... five pounds of yarn. (Don't ask about the cropped-length ivy-green crewneck sweater my now-husband bought me on our first date, though...)

I hang onto everything. I think it would break my heart to unravel this, but it sure beats throwing it away. And you got a really nice photo out of it too.

I was totally gonna suggest that you salvage the yarn! If you knit (which I'm assuming you do), then that's the perfect way to get yarn on the cheap. You can buy sweaters second hand and unravel them and save tons. And don't worry, alot of people tend to hoard stuff. I have a hard time letting go and then, after awhile, just go on a decluttering spree and chunk half my stuff.

Like the shot. Great textures and patterns.

Love the textures in this shot. I can definitely relate to your pack-ratedness sentimentality. ;)

That's a really nice story, and one of my favorite photos in your 50-day portfolio so far. Excellent "red on red" (or maroon-on-maroon) shot. Very sharp at the focal point and good use of DOF.

I'm definitely a pack-rat, so I can identify with keeping things long beyond their usefulness.

My mother is very creative in the sewing arts as well. And I'm very very sentimental. Very sweet and sad image. But I'm glad that you're improvising and doing something better with it than just tossing it. It does deserve so much more. Very nice image and story.

Hee this is a great story - it made me laugh that you will be moving 5 pounds of yarn. I was thinking you should just turn that into a blanket! Then you can keep it FOREVER because who throws away blankets? Great color in the pic as well.

great control of DOF here. the background is just out of focus enough to enhance the ball.

Nice story but you know the green sweater will have to be here in one of the coming days. I like the tecture of the photo and the DOF work nicely as well.

What a fantastic, if poignant, story. Of course it is now beholden upon me to ask you about the green sweater (sweaters on a first date...how romantic ;-) )

Photography wise I think this is one of if not my favourite of yours from this challenge. Perfect DOF for the shot and the textures are outstanding, you really feel like you could reach out and touch the (remains) of the jumper

Great colours as well. Lovely all round

It's really pretty yarn, though I would bet that once you throw it out, you would not miss it for a minute. In any case - I love your story and the photo is cool with the beautiful colors and textures.

Very cool shot! The color is really pretty, I like the lighting, the diagonally running cables and the placement of the newly forming ball next to the unraveled bit of sweater! Great story too :-)

Nice story, and shot. I think you have done a nice job photographing this beautiful red sweat, with such good memories. Good luck with your move.

I will admit to hanging on to things too, every now & then I just have to throw a bunch of it out for lack of room. I love the blurriness in the back of the photo, it really brings clarity to the front.
P.S. Good idea on the dish towels.
