With shots like this I tend to use a vertical composition to include more of the stem. To me it's like that rule joint rule in human portraits. When you include the bud but cut the stem, it's like cutting the flower at the joint. It just feels more natural to me. That doesn't mean I'm right though! |

It would be nice to see all 3 of these flowers in focus. You don't list your aperture, but I'd have to guess it was very shallow. Small flowers outside are always so hard to photograph, because even the gentlest breeze will blow your subject out of your set DOF. |
