Greetings from the Critique Club!

So, Doc, we meet again...muwahahhahaahahhhh...

Artistic: Very colourful and textures are fantastic for something as amorphous as clouds. Just coming into twilight, I'd say, so the purists probably voted you down for not having star trails or the moon visible. Ah well. Their loss.

Technical: I like the light here and the dreaminess captured. The comp is a little straightforward but it isn't hurting the image. Just not extreme in any way. But an image like this shouldn't need extreme POVs to make it. Nice amount of pp, doesn't look overdone despite all the steps listed.

Overall: I think your final score and placing say it all. Great work, keep it up!

Feel free to PM me,

Susan

Nefertiti doesn't look very happy and I don't get the t-shirt hanging off of her.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

First impression: Yowza, I am very glad I don't owe you any money!! I'm afraid to say anything other than 'nice portrait', but then you asked for a critique...so here goes...

Aristic: This kind of pose is a great one, all glowery and mean. I love the neat white shirt and tie, I almost wonder how long it'll be before they're splattered with blood or something! As you have fair hair (love the red beard and blond hair) there seems to be a little bit of washiness going on. Burning to bring out your eyebrows would have made a difference. That or carefully applied makeup just a titch darker than your own hair, so it wouldn't look fake.

Technical: Crop is a little tight to the top of the head, and I am wallowing a little in the negative space flanking you. I feel that a crop in to the outside edge of the coat lapels would have pulled it together a little more and tiny bit more headroom would just give it that little bit extra. Comp and lighting are fine for this shot. Try putting the light (a flood?) lower than your face, say angled up at you approx 45% and get that great monster-lighting effect. That combined with the glower could make all the difference.

Overall: A good finish so no complaints there, but never hurts to mess around and try out some of the suggestions here. You can never shoot too much. Keep up the great work!

Feel free to PM me,

Susan

Thinking outside the box

Greetings from the Critique Club!

First impression: I gave this shot a 7 because I like everything here: the literal box on the floor on which to think out of and the blur, and what looks like a hand/hind paw escaping the box on the left. Even the modest amount of pp is agreeable.

Artistic: Frankly this is a very snaffles type shot, which is probably why I like it so much! The use of the angles of the floor planking to create dynamism and the safe sanctuary of the box being violated by the escaping lion cub. Great way to get your point across. Stick with it.

Technical: Good lighting, ambient is my guess. Comp is good, love the overhead shot but it's not everyone's cuppa tea. And seeing that this was an Expert challenge with lots of heavy hitters entered, well, I'd say that that is definitely a factor. You took a chance entering a photo with only some blur/timelapse and tonemapping, and I think it worked very well.

Overall: Definite style starting to evolve here, and you may not get high scores of tons of comments, but you are definitely learning your D90/kit lens and putting both to good use. And you used a tripod in this case too otherwise you couldn't have shot so slow, so good to know you have the gear and know when to use it. Please keep on entering what you like and let the scores fall where they may.

Feel free to PM me,

Susan

When You Fall, Try Not to Bust Your A**

Greetings from the Critique Club!

First impression: I really liked this shot and gave it a 6 during voting.

Technical: Great studio and gradient lighting and that is a huge huge plus on this site. Check out regular ribbon winners like gyaban and KarenNfld, to name only two. Comp is a little too safe in that it is very centred and straight-on, probably for impact, but a little more could have been done.

Artistic: You're pushing the envelope with this entry, of which I am a huge fan. The resigned, 'I'm banged up and don't know what to do' look is great. If you had given yourself some extra damage, say some fake blood or a black eye too (with makeup!) I think you would have scored a bit higher. And strictly fwiw, I think that if the bandage had been wrapped a little closer to your head it would look a little less cartoony and more serious, as though you HAD sustained injury.

Overall: I think you have the potential to really rock this site, just keep the lighting good and go wacko with the artistic side!

Feel free to PM me,

Susan
