| 05/08/2007 01:31:28 PM | Child waitingby MelethiaComment: Oh, man, this one gets you! It's done really well, but I love the scene (or don't love it, depending on how you want to put it). The kid leaning towards the door, waiting, the other lady in back not paying attention to anything, the emptiness otherwise. Wow. Very interesting. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

I like the composition. Good work. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

Interesting idea, "competing against yourself", and you went to a lot of trouble to edit this image.
Strong points: The kid looks great, good smile, great postures. The blurred background has just enough detail to give context without becoming intrussive. The colours are gentle and good to look at. The composition is fine.
Possible weaknesses: The second pasted in shot (your son on the right) looks very much pasted in. It is not organic with the field, it looks like he's floating there, not really part of the image. However, you did a great job of editing out the other people you mention in your notes.
Overall: This is two nice images of your son playing soccer, but as a composite it needs more work to really work. Also, even though the image might mean a lot to you and your son, usually family pictures do not have a strong meaning to other viewers, especially viewers who will spend only a couple seconds voting on each image.
I hope this helps. If I can be of further help, please let me know.

I remember seeing this image during the voting stage. My first thought was, "Good candid!" I love the smile, it is so engaging, it is all over his face. The B/W treatment suits the image well. I gave it a 7.
That said, the main "distractions" are the strings in front of the face, and the busy background. The background is part of the story, but it is slightly blurred, so it sort becomes something where you don't know: is it a background, or is it part of the story? The strings, they actually look good in front of his face, but at first glance they are a bit put-offy. In a challenge, most people only look at each image for a few seconds. If something looks odd, they will vote the image a lower score. The strings in front of the face look a bit odd.
As for technicals, I see no problems. The exposure/post-processing are very good.
I hope this helps. If I can be of further help, please let me know.

| 05/08/2007 11:49:34 AM | After the Rainby kirbicComment: So this was yours, I wouldn't have guessed :) This is such a weird image in some ways, such a disconnect in a way between the top and bottom parts, and yet, so real. Having lived in Wyoming for a long time, I sort of know things look pretty strange sometimes (most of the time) in the desert areas. I really like this image, it's real to me. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

Challenge: Meets the challenge, no problems there.
Strong points: Great architecture, beautiful shots of it. The colours in the individual images, especially the two indoor shots, are spectacular, as is the detail in those two shots.
Possible weaknesses: Mainly the presentation. There seems to be a disconnect between the grandeur of the images, and your presentation of them as a group. The orange is a bit on the strong side, the extra white border around the bottom image gives a sense of disconnect, the different treatment for the individual images increases this sense of disconnect.
Technicals: The two indoor shots look to have no technical problems. The light in the shot to the right is more difficult to control.
Overall: I think that what you mainly have here is three beautiful shots that, even though they belong together, are not working together as a unit. They are beautiful by themselves, but put together it is too much. The presentation increases this sense of the images being individual shots rather than a unit or a story.
I hope this helps. If I can be of further help, please let me know.

| 05/07/2007 12:42:26 PM | Dressing on a Summer Eveningby alexzenComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
Challenge: Definitely meets the challenge.
Strong points: The slight voyeuristic feeling of the image, without being a in your face "voyeur" shot, works in favour of the image. The warm colour scheme. Sexy and fun, as one of your commenters puts it.
Possible weaknesses: The cut-off areas of the model (in centre and right image). The uneven colour of the framing between the images. The same framing is too wide, it separates the images too much - it might be better to have those frames be the same width, or even less width, than the edge frame. The top frame being so much narrower is a bit jarring.
Technicals: Look great to me. The exposure seems right on, your idea of the textured curtain to provide interest was great.
Overall: A fun image, nicely done, and with a good score to show for it. Keep up the good work!
I hope this helps. If I can be of further help, please let me know.
