Collection: Challenge Photos
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
Location: Canyonlands National Park near Moab, UT
Date: Apr 16, 2007
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/50s and 1/400s
Galleries: Landscape
Date Uploaded: Apr 19, 2007

Shot at Canyonlands National Park about an hour after sunrise. Rain had moved through the area overnight, so humidity was high. The haze, broken clouds and sun made for some dramatic views.
This is two exposures on tripod, one at 1/400s, the other at 1/50s, combined manually in Photoshop. Editing steps:
- Converted exposures from RAW and layered
- Masked the blown areas of the 1/50s exposure to reveal the shorter exposure. Feathered mask to blend exposures
- Adjusted curves on each exposure to suit
- Cropped
- Tweaked local contrast
- Slight adjustments to hue and saturation
- Resampled to 720x720
- USM
- Final tweaks to curves
- Save for Web
- Done

So this was yours, I wouldn't have guessed :) This is such a weird image in some ways, such a disconnect in a way between the top and bottom parts, and yet, so real. Having lived in Wyoming for a long time, I sort of know things look pretty strange sometimes (most of the time) in the desert areas. I really like this image, it's real to me.

I'm not voting in this challenge but my thoughts if I was..

Either...
a) this used the Expert Editing rules and somehow it just doesnt work for me. It feels like a combination of images but the colours in each were not matched well, or
b) the lighting seen here was in fact the lighting on the day, in which case it is a very surreal scene.
The challenge being expert may hinder your score if (b) is the case.

Wow. What a fantastic shot. So many things going on in so many layers, and yet they work well together as a unit. So Southwest :) The light is precious. ~10
