in thumbnail this felt like train tracks. now I see it is the great American metaphor, the Highway. the road lines reflect on the car. the highway within.

lines and sky are all we see. line and sky are painted the same color. There is only line/sky and not-line/sky. From this distinction comes everything.

our experience is always mediated by our perception of it. here we see it as a literal obstacle that divides up the scene in ways the scene itself is unaware of.

one imagines unseen forces playing on the lives of these people, bringing them together and pushing them apart.

but of course it's really a seen force, and it's playing on us, not them.
