a good photograph has a magic quality. every detail seems planned to an impossible degree. nothing in this photo seems superfluous. the "land" and the "boat" with the water in between offer all the allegorical richness of the sea, plus they are one of several pairings here: mother and child, father and child, the two plates(?) in the upper right. The graceful pose of the child is like the reversal of a Tiepolo ceiling. Even the hat falling off the mother's head but still hanging there seems to have meaning... something about protection that cannot always be there but is always nearby... something about trust. There's a wonderful feeling of balance here, that all is right with the world, and I trust you because of the high angle of perspective, looking down upon this utopian world. Now of course when I analyze every little detail it sounds like I'm full of shit, but the point is what I said at first. A good photo has a confidence that makes you *think* every detail is planned, and offers possibilities for people like me who like to come up with theories.
