Snow Covered Love
by pidge

Comment:
Nearly a 5.4 isn't too bad a score. The technicals aren't bad, although the snow is completely blown. Since it's not really the subject, I don't think it's a big loss. Perhaps I would have looked for a more interesting or dynamic composition. This shot is a bit tight and a bit too centered. It isn't bad, but isn't inspired either.

I like the technicals which are well done. The composition is pretty good, although I may have cropped a bit more space into the left side (not a lot though). The picture is fairly noisy along the gradient, which is odd for ISO 100. People on DPC almost uniformly hate noise. Perhaps a run through Neat Image would have cleared that up. Like the last photo I commented on, I think the voters were rewarding your technicals with fewer really low scores, but perhaps couldn't get excited enough about an empty jug to score it much higher.

It was a difficult object to shoot, I'm sure, with the dynamic range of the darks and lights. The highlight is a bit blown, which may have been impossible to help. Otherwise the composition and technicals are good. Perhaps the biggest thing is merely the subject. I think there were too many shots of blue knick-knacks. You will notice you had a huge spike of 5 votes. I think people recognized the technical excellence, but just couldn't get excited about the picture.

To Warm Her Heart

Composition is excellent. I like the crop a lot and I love her wistful look. The sepia is restrained, although I'd like to see a B&W as well to judge whether I like it better. Perhaps the sepia is not the proper tone for her skin. I'm glad the flowers don't jump out in a blast of color. They are subtle, although there are plenty here who do not like selective desat at all. The biggest issue is the highlight on her right breast. It is blown enough that we lack any definition. If you stare long enough you can fool yourself that there is no breast there at all. There is also a small smudge or shadow at the lower edge that distracts because the eye keeps asking "is that a nipple or not?"

Ya, this has a chance. I love it. Great B&W conversion. 9 for now, may bump at the end. Bumping to 10. This is my pick for a ribbon. My only question? Will it be above or below mine... ;)

Hi Caleb. I did recognize your mantra. Is that you? or someone else? Nice convesion to B&W. What are you doing with your hand? At first it looked like you were eating lunch. Are you smoking? The composition is nice. 8

I think this is a good shot in the wrong challenge. I didn't vote romance, but I'd be hard pressed to think this represents it in any conventional sort of way. I agree the shadow is a bit distracting, but I'm not sure how you'd get rid of it. And to think I thought you were the "eve" of the last few challenges. I knew you had a propensity for nakedness, but I guessed wrong. :)

I thought you'd score better than 5.2 with this one and I was right. Two limitations on an otherwise well captured shot. 1) The highlights are too bright on his arms and forehead. 2) The shot is soft. DPC loves sharp sharp sharp. The lens should be plenty capable and the speed was high enough. Perhaps it was the aperture or this is a tight tight crop. Just a bit more contrast would probably add some more kick, but you can't do that as is with the highlights as they are already.

Man, nobody gave you extra points for that song? I liked it at one point of my life. Personally I didn't like the blue cast shots as much as shots with natural light but blue subjects. Ask yourself this, if you take away the blue, are you left with a shot that says anything? Not spectacular. It's technically well done, but it lacks something for us to really turn over in our minds.

Wine

Wine
by _eug

Comment:
The composition is nice. I think I'd prefer just a bit tighter on the crop. The biggest problem is the blue hue makes the wine look very dark and unappealing. In the end, I just don't think it's a good combo, unless you could have backlit the glass with its own light source to bring out some true red.

EDIT: I came back to say the gradient is pretty sweet. I forgot to mention that. I like it. As far as the unexciting mentioned in other comments, well, I looked at it as a product shot. It doesn't have a lot of emotion to it, but it's a nice enough composition for a wine picture.
