Great idea. You might get a better result by using nearly parallel sidelighting to give more form, shape and texture to the star anise seed.

Wow, love the composition and bright red of the bikes. Very nice perspective and angle to make an otherwise boring shot really stand out photographically.

Nice color balance. I think your shutter may have been too slow to catch a nice crisp image. Maybe a tripod would have focused better, or perhaps a higher iso. Still a very nice shot.
