You did a great job of keeping distracting glare and reflection off the glass tubes and shiny pencils both. The yellow pencil seems to have a bit more glare than the rest of the pencils. Not complaining, but I wonder why it did this. Would it have mattered if the pencil was rotated slightly cause I noticed that the flat side of all the other pencils are facing front, but the yellow pencil has a pointy corner facing forward. I also like how the background isn't pure white, but a grey-ish white. Sometimes pure white is better, but you made a great jugdement to go with the off white in this situation. Great job and good luck in the challenge. |

I have to wonder though what you do for a living. The tips of your fingers look like thay have worked very hard toward something. (I hope it wasn't this test. LOL). It adds a bit of mystery to this photo for me. The dark area that your hand makes is very dark, but I don't think I would change it because you would have to change the positioning of your hand, and then it just wouldn't be the same. Great job and good luck in the challenge. |

The shavings spill off the left edge just a little bit. I would like to see it either all in the frame, or spilling out more. With the tad bit that it is off the photo, it looks like it was almost an accident that it spilled off. The shaving in the front makes a really neat shadow and I like how the shavings are wavy like that. Great focus, and you did a really good job keeping glare and reflection off the metal part of the pencil. Overall gret job. Good luck in the challenge. |

| 08/25/2002 11:35:00 PM | Noneby manoloComment: This is a really good photo, and focus appears to be good, and the angle and frame placement are good, but there is really too much bright spot to say much else about it. looks like quite a bit of post editing here and makes it hard to tell anything about lighting. it seems like half the photo is missing. this is just my personal preference. I like good lighting and color. good luck in the challenge. |
| 08/24/2002 12:46:00 AM | Saturday Nightby eloComment: I think that if you wanted the mirror in the photo that you might have wanted to back it up just a bit. It's a bit distracting from the rest of the photo. That is just my opinion though. I like the mirror in there, but it's a bit too close for my taste. I wonder why you went with black and white here. A lot of time people go with black and white when dealing with people and skin tones, but I like faces in color. You might have tried it and it didn't look good to you. I would like to see them both to compare b/w to color. I love the eye pencil idea. Other than the closeness of the mirror, the angle is great and lighting appears to be good as well. I like the angle so you can tell you are trying to look into the mirror. You have nice eyes and pretty lashes. They would make for great macros. Good job with the photo and good luck in the challenge. |
| 08/22/2002 09:49:00 AM | Bloomingby puppet10Comment: Great effect. Looks like it was done in a glass or some kind of curved glass. I like how you have the soft focus on the word "soft" lol Pretty neat. The lighting is great. I wonder why there is a green outline. was is something to do with the way you acchieved the curved "blooming" look? Not complaining, just curious. Actually, I think it adds to the photo by giving it an edge so the yellow doesn't just fall into the black background. Cool. I like it. Good luck with the challenge. |
| 08/19/2002 06:01:00 PM | Tools of the Tradeby tee tahComment: Very nice. My thoughts exactly. I entered something else, but wished I could have done something with a carpenters pencil. My first job was in a lumber yard (and I'm a girl, so that made it extra special) I got a lot of flack for being a girl "out of place" but after 3 years, I real knew my stuff and I was the only one that ever remembered my pencil, so the (at first skeptical) guys needed me to mark stuff for cutting and I felt like I finally fit in. Anyway, lol...The lighting is great. Maybe a little bit dark behind the hammer and wrist section of the glove, but I don't think it takes away from the photo. Great shot and good luck with the challenge. |
| 08/19/2002 04:18:00 PM | Being of Sound Mind and Shell...by KazComment: Too darn funny. This is very creative and original. I like the obvious, but subtle pan. I have the feeling someone is going to comment on the focus of the pencil. However, I think its important that the focus is on the paper. The pencil is IN the photo, that's all that matters. I like the lighting and the angle. You're going to have to do a tutorial on how to train lobsters to hold a pencil. Too funny. Good luck with the challenge. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
