running scaredby zheka78Comment: Greetings from the Critique Club
Hi, Firstly this is a nice shot, a good idea and as was pointed out
in the comments well exposed (difficult with black objects in the shot..)
I think you scored OK with the voters, maybe deserved to do better as it has some interesting elements that lift it above other entries..
Improvements:
Well, the flash is a little harsh and like it or not this gives the immidiate impression of a snap shot, this will hit your votes
Composition is OK, with 'eye' contact from both subjects
Overall, a nice picture, you could try to be more creative with your compositions, Look at the top 20 in the challenge for ideas.. and avoid harsh direct flash... an off camera cord can really help, or as a cheaper alternative use a flash diffuser or try 'bouncing' the flash off a wall or ceiling..

night rainby agenkinComment: Greeting from the Critique Club
Congratulations on the top 10 place, well deserved.
This is a great picture, well observed and obviously deliberated over and timed carefully.
You have shown great skill in composition and eye for a photo. The use of the oncoming car for sidelighting is inspired and shows the patience for the 'right' moment that makes the difference between a good shot and a great one...
The only issue for me is the blur. It is fine to show movement in the characters as this helps imply racing to get out of the wet, but at 1/25 second this looks handhelf and the movement in the sceen elements (for example the fire hydrant) let the overall shot down.
Next time try using a tripod to avoid shake... apart from that... very, very nice and a really good fit to the challenge..

Will it ever stop!by wingyisleedsComment: Greeting from the Critique club...
Firstly nice photo, good tone and mood...
The comments on this photo have been pretty positive and useful. A number of people pointing out that showing more of the models face would have helped. The black hair has really dominated that part of the picture and does not help the overall shot.
The plant is also a little dominating and upsets the balance a little.
Overall an excellent effort, your photography is showing great improvement and the idea is solid. The conversion to Black and white is well done and I feel that you have achieved what you set out to do. Keep up the good work and take into account the feedback from the commenters...

You received some useful comments to the entry and a number of people pointed out the two obvious 'flaws'
soft focus
Horizontal line
Overall the photo is nice, it meets the challenge and the purple tone looks believeable rather than contrived (as in some entries) the composition is fine and the lack of a focal point (as commented) is not really an issue in this style of photo.
I'm assume that the line is a power line or similar, it is a shame it is there and could be cloned out outside of a DPC challenge.
The focus needs work, in this type of shot you can get away with a little softness, but lack of sharpness (rightly or wrongly) is a number one reason for low scores on this site.
All in all a nice effort, that could have scored much better with some small improvements. Good work.

Peering to Infinity by DrAchooComment: Wow... this visit produced some stunning work... congrats on your ribbon(s)...
I pulled off a similar double entry with my shots for the Purple and XIII challenges....(both from the same location in Monterey) I didn't quite achieve your level of success... 4th and 22nd.. but I'm happy enough with that :-)

Take my breath away by scaramangaComment: Excellent... well deserved ribbon. In many ways it is easier for a purple challenge to manipulate color balance.. (as I did, see 4th)
This is a better entry for not 'cheating' :-)
Congrats. |
