I wondered if some people might attempt this type of intrepretation of the challenge, and how would they fare. I think you've managed to convey the concept nicely in this case. I can get your feeling :-) I think you've even managed to make the centered comp work well. Great use of dof. It's obvious you put some thought and care into finding the proper setting, it just works well. Although, I'll venture to guess that perhaps why this works well is that this really is a special place for you. The little sapling behind her is a nice touch for some reason. Interesting, you've broken a couple rules. The centered comp, the tree line going across center of frame, but...it just really works well. The shot is nice. I love it when people break rules and make it 'work'. :-) Really nice job, I like this shot. Well done. Good luck, and I hope voters can see the magic in this image. :-) | Photographer found comment helpful. |

| 05/10/2006 05:47:34 AM | One Legged Ape Baby Learns To Climbby TommyMoe21Comment: Greetings from the Critique Club :-)
This is a nice capture you've got here. It's interesting, it seems like people are usually put off by human baby shots, but everybody always likes to see nice shots of baby critters, and this is a nice one :-) I think this fits the challenge well, I could definitely envision this image on the pages of a wildlife magazine or the like.
My first impression of the photo is the strong full frame composition and very nice use of dof. The subject stands out great. I like how he is 'framed' by the tree branches. You've definitely caught him in an interesting, and 'fun' potition/situation, and I think it makes for a very engaging photo. The part of the other ape at top right is a slight distracting, in that as I look longer at the image, I find my eye to keep glancing up at it, but it is a very minor thing, and hey, what can you do, ask the ape to please move out of frame? :-P One other small detail, it might be nice to see all of the little guys hand at the top, but I think that would only strengthen the shot more, I don't really see it as being detrimental at all the way it is now.
So overall, a nice shot, fits the challenge well. Great interest factor, and not a bad score. Nicely done. If you have any questions or comments or anything, please feel free to contact me.
Happy shooting,

| 05/09/2006 12:53:19 AM | Under The Mountainby TUBORGComment: Greetings from the Critique Club,
Well, this is your 'Negative Image' shot, it definitely fits the challenge. This is a nice scene, with the mountains making for a nice backdrop. The very first thing that struck me when the image opened though, was that the houses are not straight :-) There doesn't seem to be enough going on with the surroundings, or perspective wise or anything to warrant that fact, it just comes across as just a touch careless. You might already know, but it is possible to straighten horizons, and lines and such in editing with an arbitrary rotation before doing any cropping. For many voters, tilted horizons, skylines and such, if not apparently done on purpose, can cause minor point deductions.
You did a nice job on the conversion to 'negative'. It works ok as a negative, but doesn't seem to have that "wow, this is really cool inverted" factor that the top scorers in the challenge achieved. I will say though, that this was a difficult challenge in that respect. Many people I think went into this challenge not fully knowing what to expect. It kind of drifts into the abstract, almost digital art realm, I think. So not a bad job.
Another thing, that a couple of commenters touch on, is in the composition, crop/framing wise. To me, it just doesn't achieve a nicely balanced 'feel' in the image. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it seems to be a matter of either too much/too little of sky and/or foreground. The sky is featureless, so perhaps a tighter crop to the top of the mountains could be stronger. Or another possibility to try would be a 'minimalist' approach, and frame the houses right down close to the bottom of the frame.
So overall, not bad. A nice image that works for a very challenging challenge (IMO). I think stronger weight, better balance could of boosted your score.
If you have any questions or comments or anything, please feel free to contact me.
Happy shooting,

| 05/05/2006 12:25:57 AM | Smoothby NeilComment: This is very cool. I guess it would be a minimalist abstract? Very engaging, I can look at this for quite some time (in fact I did). It is just so very complex in it's simplicity, if that makes any sense. The lighting, or bright to dark 'motion' is really great. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
