A marvelous discovery that's been treated to fine composition and processing. If it sounds like I'm taking anything away from the photographer, I'm not at all. This image is bursting with layers of mood, symbolism, irony and glee. The title alone is worth the price of admission... if there were such. Really enjoyable.

A lovely, delicate, evocative image. It's a palimpsest from an ancient Sanskrit manuscript. I can see the elephant and then hints of other animals in the bush. A running person on the left, a pint of Ben & Jerry's in the center, but I guess part of the point is to unshackle the imagination. The foliage looks like it's been pressed between panes of glass. I can almost hear a breathy flute in the background. Beautiful and rewarding. The title is great.

This picture is -- and because it's so casually overused I seldom use the word, but here goes -- awesome. First, it's utterly straightforward, no added textures or tricky processing to concoct mood or heighten realism. The marvelous shadows steal the show, plummeting predatory from the left, atwitter from the standbox and slipping away on the far right. The composition is wonderful, weighted by the woman, a few inanimate objects, shadows and the lovely textured gray wall and sidewalk. The bright yellow standbox echoed in her more muted yellow hat. Her seeming obliviousness to the ephemeral drama. I could go on and on, but already have... One of four personal favorites in the challenge.

What first leaps to mind when I see this image is the medium - it's like a charcoal or soft pencil drawing on stippled paper. Just beautiful before I've even taken in the content of the photo. And the content is mysteriously, casually suggestive, be it sensual or workaday. I think that this sort of hint of a wider, even explanatory, context is very fascinating to Ubique. This image is a strong homage to him. What in the world is up with that sawhorse? The shapes, light and tones work on several levels to bring a strong, coherent composition to fruition. Reminds me of pulp fiction covers of the 1930's without being at all lurid. One of four personal favorites.

A wonderful image. The perfectly positioned and delineated legs get the show rolling. The incredible shadow of the bird itself, cast on uneven ground, shimmers in ragged, mirage-like fashion. The bill alone is a revelation. The interplay between a truncated reality and a coyly offered phantasmagoria shatters complacency, or at least the rut of "knowing". The almost glaring backdrop to the shadow, consisting of water, sand or soil and upper legs, elicits a squint of presence. I see in this image the unsteady birth of hieroglyphics. One of four personal favorites.

A subtle, delicate, howling image. As the scene recedes in overlapping planes, it's the second plane that's in focus, a fine choice that enables the windblown snow to be encompassing rather than fronting. The lovely, muted palette of green, gray and white exists in fine compositional balance. The mottled, obscuring background, which actually includes the foreground swirling snow, works as pseudo-bokeh. One of four personal favorites.
