Work vs Hobby - The Camera Waits Patientlyby jjenksComment: Hello from the Critique Club!
I can really relate to this choice... and I think most of us here on the site can...so it's a great idea for the challenge I think.
I really like the use of dof here. It tells a story and gets the point across very nicely.
For the window, I'm wondering if you could have shot the photo lower, bringing the camera down and ending your shot with just a bit of the window showing above your head, and it would show more of your legs and seating area as well? That might have depended on the position of your mirror, but I think it might have been a way around your trouble with the bright window.
I'm not sure how to get rid of that reflection in the camera lens. It is a bit distracting, but in my opinion I don't think it really takes away too much from the shot.
I think you did a good job and I look forward to seeing your challenge shots from here on. Hope this has been helpful!

You can choose anything..... as long as it's an Orange! by aKiwiComment: Hi from the Critique Club.
This is a difficult one for me to critique because I know it's a ribbon winner, but it was really not among my favorites.
I think probably for me, the thing that most detracted from the photo was that there is so much going on. When I crop it to simply the oranges (and baskets) below that large chrome strip, I like it much better. The lighting and composition appear more snap-shotish to me.
I think the subject, the way all these oranges are laid out so nicely together, somehow could have made more impact. Maybe if the lighting was a little brighter or more interesting. Also, as I mentioned earlier, I would have come in closer to the oranges and left out all the upper part of the photo.
It seems I'm in the minority on this one and that's okay! I hope you find the comments helpful and congratulations on your ribbon!

Gambling Addictby ImagineerComment: Hi from the Critique Club!
From a confirmed chocolate addict, the only choice I see here it to eat them now or wait until later! :)
I think the concept of this photo is great for choices. The idea of having the hands there is a unique idea, and I think it's done pretty well. I just don't know if it really adds anything to the shot.
I would have liked more emphasis on the candies, and less on the box and the hands. The focus on the candies themselves seems just a tiny bit soft (it appears the camera focused on the word "time" on the box lid). I think the shot might have been more effective with a solid color background (vs. the woodgrain counter) and a closer and sharper focus on the candies.
I think with those adjustments made, the addition of the hands might have been good and more interesting.
I hope this has been helpful!

the most difficult dilemma of the dayby PhileineComment: Hi from the Critique Club!
I like the tones in this shot, but I do wonder if color would have added more interest in this being a "choice."
The angle of this does add interest to the shot, and I think overall the exposure is pretty good - although I agree that the white shoes distract from the rest of the photo because of their brightness. So technically, aside from the white shoes, I like this shot well enough.
The subject choice itself does not really carry much interest for me. When I judge a photo's strength in meeting the challenge, I first look at the shot without a title and without knowing for sure which challenge it was in - and see if I can figure it out. I can figure it out with this one, so the connection to the challenge is there - I just don't personally find it an interesting way of conveying choice. I didn't vote on the choices challenge, but I would have given this one a 6.
Shoes might have made a more interesting subject with some color maybe -and a more unique composition? Maybe include some feet with a different shoe on each foot and a pile of shoes nearby? Just some thoughts.
I hope this is helpful!

Next Batter On Deckby L1Comment: I understood that from the title. It was an okay photo, but two things probably made me score it a little lower. First was the harsh shadow on his face from the batting helmet...you just couldn't see his face very well. The second thing is that this is a decent photo of the kid, but the angle doesn't give me a sense of waiting. Maybe if I could have seen the batter in the batter's box in the background or something. I don't get an idea that something else is going on that he has to wait for. I hope this is helpful! |

Pauseby RohnComment: For some reason, I would like this better if the person had her feet in the surf. I like the shadow. |
