Anita, from the Queen of Silhouettes, I’m just flattered by your comments. Thank you! 107 attempts. I had several with a single rider I was quite content with. I didn’t even know I got this one until I downloaded the images! Pleasantly surprised to say the least. This a full frame image, no cropping. 100 degree temps and I had to walk to the spot and didn’t want to lug a second lens; Figured I’d be better off with the 70-200, wrong. At 70 mm, my back was against a barbed wire fence with six foot dense weeds behind it.
Sunset was around 8:30 pm, and the riders had to be off the track by 8:30, so I wasn’t going to get the golden light I wanted. This one was snapped at around 7. I’m at the bottom of a 20 feet hill, so the illusion of sunset is there. I did have to play with this to get the light color I wanted. I actually used your latest entry as a guide. It’s a natural vignette, not added. Exposure was really tricky because I could not time very well where the riders would be with the sun and they were very fast. Ended up with a high shutter speed priority with an automatic 5 stops underexposure dialed in. Most of the riders had called it a day by 7:30 and were leaving.
Thanks everyone for the wonderful comments. I know now where the higher scores come from. Wish I could figure out the 4s and 5s. |
Wow, that is some backstory, thank you. You deserve the blue even more because of what you had to achieve to get this perfect shot. Usually behind every great image, there’s a fantastic story, thanks for sharing. As for the lower votes, I’ve worked out there are just some people that don’t know a very good photo if they fell over it; and of course, then there’s the other reason, which we won’t go into. It’s best not to think about it :)
Cheers and all the best. |

I would’ve been so proud to have shot something like this, perfect, in every way. And I loved the fragments of earth the tyres brought forth, perfectly composed image and wonderful edit, if indeed you did edit it, doesn’t look like much was done. I cannot understand why this did not score over eight. Would love to know how many takes it took to achieve this.
Many congratulations on your personal best.

Norman at the Crossroadsby noranekoComment: I love the high contrast look, like Don said nothing really is happening. But very interesting to look at, especially dig the way that guy is sitting. |

Where The Wild Petunias Growby grahamgatorComment: Your images always bring a smile to my face. Such a happy little photo, I really love that one little drop of water coming from the tap. And the pop of purple petunias. |

Road to nowhereby AmmieComment: I really had to stop and stare at this image for a long time, it could easily be the cover of some apocalyptic Movie poster. Always a big fan of leading lines, I love how the viewer is kept in suspense, towards what could be some dramatic event at the end of the road.. The end of the world as we know it! |

Wildflowers by odriewComment: Such a beautiful, serene landscape, beautiful, earthy tones. I remember, when I first viewed it whilst voting I didn’t know how to express anything worthy of a comment, so I didn’t comment. But I remember it gave me a good feeling. Congratulations on your ribbon. You’ve done pretty well since you returned. |
