(1) COMPOSITION (CONTENT) Well composed. The strong use of diagonal leading lines makes a very powerful composition. The use of the rule of thirds can be seen here as well. Well thought out.
(2) BACKGROUND I love the background that you have used, even if it was just handed to you :-). The is nothing more universally loved than a magnificant sunset. The texture in the clouds is one of the better examples I have seen in this challenge.
(3) CAMERA WORK ,TECHNICAL Exposure seems a little dark to me. I am wondering if you did any bracketing on this shot. With a lttle longer exposure, there might have been just a little more detail in the foreground, and that would have added another level of interest.
(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING ,TECHNICAL Good processing. Did you do any experimenting on cropping? I am thinking a little bit tighter crop would have cut out some the dark trees in the foreground and made up for the lack of detail.
(5)MEETING THE CHALLENGE This photo does a very good job of meeting the challenge.
(6) MY OPINION ON THE PHOTO A very beautiful photograph. I would love to see this with a nice border, maybe matching the color of the pink in the clouds. I am surprised this did not do better, I scored it very high mysewlf. |

(1) COMPOSITION (CONTENT) Well composed. The strong use of diagonal leading lines makes a very powerful composition.
(2) BACKGROUND I love the background that you have used, makes it look even more like an exam room. If the white paper/cloth has been completely smooth, it would not have added so much texture to the photo.
(3) CAMERA WORK ,TECHNICAL Exposure seems a little harsh to me. I am wondering if you use the on-camera flash? On first look I thought that some softer lighting would have made the photo better. On second thought, this reminds me of a horror film...and maybe the harsh light was intentional. It does add to the creepy feeling one gets from that scarey looking instrument in the upper left.
(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING ,TECHNICAL Good processing. I wonder how this would have looked in Black and White. That might have given it that feeling of being from an old "B" horror movie.
(5)MEETING THE CHALLENGE This photo does a very good job of meeting the challenge. I do not know what that instrument is, but it totally looks out of place in an exam room.
(6) MY OPINION ON THE PHOTO A very interesting photo. It tells a story, although a frightening one. Dr. Frankenstein anyone? | Photographer found comment helpful. |

(1) COMPOSITION (CONTENT) Very well composed. The negative space at the top is very refreshing in this composition. It seems to give the flower room to stretch. I like how the stem of the flower is such a strong diagonal line leading the eye right to the sun marks on the wall.
(2) BACKGROUND the background is a very unusual shade of green which definately adds to this photograph. it almost looks "soft" if that makes sense.
(3) CAMERA WORK ,TECHNICAL Exposure is good. Composition is very strong. The details in the pedals and stamins is incredible. Very sharp and crisp.
(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING ,TECHNICAL The white border was a very good choice for this photograph. It adds to the light airy feeling of the flower and the negative space at the top.
(5)MEETING THE CHALLENGE This photo does a very good job of meeting the challenge. I might have suggested putting the name of the group into the title for those of us that are getting senile, and can not remember. (Yes I know it was the Beatles, but not everyone might know that).
(6) MY OPINION ON THE PHOTO A better than average flower photograph. It seems I have not added any ways to make this photo better, but in all honesty, I think its about perfect the way it is.

(1) COMPOSITION (CONTENT) Normally an off center subject is better, but in this case it seems to work having the rose in the center of the frame.
(2) BACKGROUND I like the use of a shallow depth of field to soften the background which makes the rose really "pop" and stand out. There is just enough detail left in the background so that its obvious that it was taken outside.
(3) CAMERA WORK ,TECHNICAL Exposure is good. Composition good. I think that the rose bud behind the rose is a little distracting. I wonder if you could have moved your angle a bit to hide it more.
(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING ,TECHNICAL Very vivid and bright colors. I wonder how it might have looked if the photo was cropped into a square.
(5)MEETING THE CHALLENGE This photo does a very good job of meeting the challenge. I am sure this is a song we all have heard.
(6) MY OPINION ON THE PHOTO A very good flower picture. I especially like how crisp and sharp the pedals are. It looks almost as if you could touch them.

(1) COMPOSITION (CONTENT) Well composed. The strong use of rule of thirds makes a very powerful composition. The scene is also very interesting, making this a photograph that keeps the attention of the viewer for a long period of time. The details in the old wood, and in the clouds makes me want to keep coming back to see what I have missed. The longer one looks at it, the more interesting details come to light.
(2) BACKGROUND I guess in this case the background would be the heavy threatening sky. Just enough detail to add to the photo without overwhelming it.
(3) CAMERA WORK ,TECHNICAL Exposure is good. Composition is very strong. The focus is very sharp. Overall, excellent camera work.
(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING ,TECHNICAL In my opinion, this could have been cropped a little tighter to allow a better view of the interesting weathered wood. With all of the interesting textures, I wonder how this would look in Black and White.
(5)MEETING THE CHALLENGE This photo does a very good job of meeting the challenge. I can not imagine any house that I have ever seen that would match this song title quite so well.
(6) MY OPINION ON THE PHOTO A very good photograph. I would love to have this hanging in my family room so I could continue to go back and look again. Everytime I look, I see something new that I had missed before. Nicely done! | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 01/14/2003 02:13:28 PM | Candle in the Windby MeggieComment: Critique Club Critique
(1) COMPOSITION (CONTENT) Well composed. The strong diagonal line of the flame really draws the eye to the wick of the candle and that becomes the subject. I am not sure that the wick should have been so centrally located in the frame, but that is not a big distraction for me. I love the way it curves and bends.
(2) BACKGROUND The background is so uniformly lit as to become almost non-existant. This makes the subject stand out even more than it normally would. Very nice.
(3) CAMERA WORK ,TECHNICAL Exposure is good. Composition is good.
(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING ,TECHNICAL The red border disturbs me quite a little bit. The photo itself is done in greyscale, there is no reason to have such a brightly colored border. Because of its vividness, it distracts from the image instead of complimenting it.
(5)MEETING THE CHALLENGE This photo does a very good job of meeting the challenge. Of all the "Candle in the Wind" entries, this is my favorite.
(6) MY OPINION ON THE PHOTO A very nice photograph, but not terribly exciting |

(1) COMPOSITION (CONTENT) Well composed. The use of three objects (the OTHER rule of thirds) works very well here. The photograph is very well balanced.
(2) BACKGROUND The shadows from the flash (just an assumption) on the background do give this photograph a true 3 dimentional feeling.
(3) CAMERA WORK ,TECHNICAL Overall the exposure is good, but the darkness on the left is a little distracting. The colors are strong and vibrant. Composition is very pleasing to the eye.
(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING ,TECHNICAL I find that there is nothing I can add to this. The primary colors are bright and clear, the whites are really white and the blacks are black.
(5)MEETING THE CHALLENGE This photo does a very good job of meeting the challenge. This would also have worked well in the humor challenge.
(6) MY OPINION ON THE PHOTO A very good still life picture. I would love to see this hanging in a childs room. The strong colors really make this photograph. | Photographer found comment helpful. |
| 01/14/2003 11:15:12 AM | Chains around my heartby SonifoComment: Critique Club Critique
(1) COMPOSITION (CONTENT) Well composed. The diagonal lines of the chains across the heart is a nice compositional detail. The pile of chains at the bottom of the photograph are perfect use of the rule of thirds.
(2) BACKGROUND The color of the background adds to the richness of the photograph and complements the deep red of the heart. The only suggestion I could make here would be to add a little more light to the background so that it becomes a little more dominate in the photograph instead of totally disappearing at the top of the frame.
(3) CAMERA WORK ,TECHNICAL Exposure is good. Composition is strong.
(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING ,TECHNICAL There is only one change that I might suggest. Your exposure and post processing got the heart richly exposed but the chains seem just a little bit burnt out. I wish I could see more detail in them. This might have been accomplished by moving in just a little closer and making the chains a bigger part of the over all photograph.
(5)MEETING THE CHALLENGE This photo does a very good job of meeting the challenge. I might have suggested putting the name of the group into the title for those of us that are getting senile, and can not remember.
(6) MY OPINION ON THE PHOTO A very good picture. Nice use of color to invoke emotion in the viewer. Good work. | Photographer found comment helpful. |

(1) COMPOSITION (CONTENT) Well composed. The diagonal lines of branches/snow really draw the eye into the frame. This along with the strong use of rule of thirds makes a very powerful composition. The scene is also very interesting, making this a photograph that keeps the attention of the viewer for a long period of time. The longer one looks at it, the more interesting details come to light. This is a photograph that would not do as well in a thumbnail view, as many of the really interesting details are lost.
(2) BACKGROUND I like the use of a slow shutter speed to soften the water in the background which makes the foreground really "pop". This is magnified by the whiteness of the snow on the branch.
(3) CAMERA WORK ,TECHNICAL Exposure is good. Composition is very strong.
(4) DIGITAL PROCESSING ,TECHNICAL There is only one change that I might suggest. Your exposure and post processing got the water just right, but the highlight on the snow seems just a little bit burnt out. I wish I could see just a little more detail. I am not sure that you could have improved this with the limitations on post-processing on DPC though.
The blue cast to everything puts a surreal feeling into the photograph, as well as adding to the feeling of cold The surreal feeling is almost like pulling the viewer into a dream world. This is one of the dominate aspects of this photograph.
(5)MEETING THE CHALLENGE This photo does a very good job of meeting the challenge. I might have suggested putting the name of the group into the title for those of us that are getting senile, and can not remember.
(6) MY OPINION ON THE PHOTO A very good winter picture. I especially like the use of a very slow shutter speed to soften the water snd the use of blue to create that coldness. I shivered just looking at it.

| 12/17/2002 10:09:46 AM | Grazeby FrooberComment: This may be the best of the best in this challenge. The reflection of the steer looks so surreal, it gives a feeling of other-worldliness. This is a photograph that I would be proud to hang in my house. Well done. (Sorry I could not offer any constructive critisism, there is nothing I would change). | Photographer found comment helpful. |
