Friday - 5:01PMby Dirt_DiverComment: OK, I'm going through the Free Study submissions, purposefully finding those images I think are shot with a less conventional eye - this is one of those images! Thanks for offering something that isn't just DPC friendly eye-candy (though of course there's nothing wrong with eye-candy). I'll be picking one of these images for my Mu (most underrated) award:
Positives: The colouration - this really makes the image special; it really works. I like the way it's all about the guy but it's all about the landscape and the sky too. If someone had have given me a verbal description of the image, I'd have said that it wouldn't work too well - I'd have been wrong.
Critical stuff: Nothing at all.
Overall: Fantastically well conceived and well executed to boot. Great stuff. |

radiant whitespaceby briantammyComment: Very interesting portrait - not a fan of borders but this is very creatively framed - it really works. Great stuff. |

Flying Across The Waterby 3DsArcherComment: Made me laugh out loud! Reminds me of Dash from The Incredibles!
Photographically I wish there was a bit more contrast - great subject though! |

Positives: very nice abandoned scene which is well served by the tonal contrast / tone mapped look. I really like the muted colours too.
Critical stuff: I do wish there was a little more drama in the light - the image does come off a little flat looking.
Overall: A pretty effective image. |

Positives: it takes a really good image to carry this acid yellow colouration but you've pulled it off. I think this is a consequence of you using the it with the right subject. It would have been easy to go b&w here but I'm glad you didn't.
Critical stuff: Colour noise is almost always ugly and I think it does mar you image a little - not sure what you could do - I suspect noise reduction would take out some of the image's rawness (and some detail in the steps) and I can't see how a technique I use of selectively desaturating magenta and green could have been done without affecting your colouration. I do wish you'd given us a bit more space at the top - the clipping of the hand rails jars a bit.
Overall: I really like it. |

Positives: I just could pass this one by - great scene, well served by the monochrome and the image grain. Bags of atmosphere.
Critical stuff: Not much, I can't shake the feeling that the image might have been better if the composition was shifted 10% to the left but I am nit picking.
Overall: A very effective image. |

"Sunrise @ Chunky Gal Point" by RmacComment: Really beautiful.
Perhaps its my monitor but I'm seeing some target banding in the sky - I'm guessing this wasn't a RAW / 16 bit workflow? |

Positives: quite a thought provoking image.... I think.... I have been guided by the title quite a lot and I'm aware that is shaping how I am viewing it.
Critical stuff: We could list quite a lot - the colour noise, the lack of drama in the composition, the tight crop, the unsympathetic aspect ratio....
Overall: I really don't know - as a created vision, perhaps it is what you wanted to achieve but I can't help feeling that this is something that fell out of experimentation for the camera movement challenge that you though up an effective post hoc title for. In the end, for me, it isn't very successful as an imag. |
