Hope in Your Darkest Hour

Ok, I see the guy, and I'm struggling to make out what he's holding. It's a teddybear, right?

I think the concept is very good, but I would've prefered a slightly different angle and composition. Maybe taking a picture from higher up would have worked better (looking down on someone's darkest hour?), and I think there's a bit too much negative space at the bottom. The highlights on the bear seem a bit burnt out, I think that's why it's difficult to make out at first, but it's actually a nice touch :)

The lighting isn't great, and the background is a bit distracting. I'm not convinced the B&W works well - the shades of grey present are all pretty similar, and when you look at the photo, you first stare at the highlights in the top left corner, then look at the statue as a bit of an afterthought. Nice enough composition, unusual enough god, but could have been done better technically.

Closed Doors

It's a nice shot, and the angle is good - the closed doors look scary and dominating, especially in contrast to the cute colourful kid.

However, conceptually I don't get it. Closed doors and the angle you used could be symbolic of exclusion (maybe by particular religious rules or whatever), but then the kid is an entirely random element in the picture. So it seems like you saw there was a Religion challenge, and then walked up to a church and took some shots without thinking about it too much. Which does meet the challenge, but there's a whole sea of potential meaning that you're then entirely missing out on.

Oh, this is adorable! What a cute pose :)

And I was about leave pp tips as well, but levyj got there before me. To throw in my 2 cents anyway - there are a bunch of different ways of desaturating a picture, but I found using the channel mixer to do it gives you the most control over the resulting image. And doing it in a new layer, then using a layer mask to bring back bits of colour from the background is quite quick, and you can reverse the process easily if you mess up bits (and messing up occasionally is inevitable).

But anyway, I think you did a really good job on this, that's a lovely picture :)

Aww, I really like this - I'm surprised it didn't score higher! I guess cutting off the cat's back and the bottom of the fishbowl would've brought it down a bit, plus DPC voters seem to like sharp, clear things. Still, I like it, I think it's really funny :)

Amazingly creative, wonderful artwork. So deeply disturbing. I like the empty facial expression.

And after watching the video about how it was made, I also bow down before your post-processing skills.

Such lovely pictures :)

Basically, I agree with the general consensus - the background picture doesn't jump out enough because of the desaturation.
I think it would've been interesting to try and do very different pp on the 3 pictures - have one conventional, sharp one with bright colours, make one of them B&W or duotone of some sort, and totally overprocess one and make it burst with colour.

It's still cute as it is though - well done.

Ooh, very pretty! Hmm, I guess the noise was intentional, but I do think a nice smooth background would have maybe worked better for this...
