Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Triptych II (Advanced Editing V*)
Camera: Canon EOS-5D
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
Location: Chicago, IL
Date: Apr 29, 2007
Aperture: f/8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/160
Date Uploaded: Apr 29, 2007

Image details are for the main/background image. Starting with the background image, I desaturated it a bit, and resized it to be 720 square including the white border. Each of the other two images I left alone, other than cropping a bit and adding a slightly smaller white border. This was my first attempt at this type of photograph, and while it may not score high I'm pretty happy with this result. Unfortunately, to get it under 200k, I had to sacrifice quite a bit of quality in the JPEG compression.

Such lovely pictures :)

Basically, I agree with the general consensus - the background picture doesn't jump out enough because of the desaturation.
I think it would've been interesting to try and do very different pp on the 3 pictures - have one conventional, sharp one with bright colours, make one of them B&W or duotone of some sort, and totally overprocess one and make it burst with colour.

It's still cute as it is though - well done.

This is a nice group of shots but I think it could use some more saturation.

i can understand why you might have desaturated the background - it certainly helps your insets stand apart from the main page. I think this is a lovely family photo. Great idea - I think this is something I am going to have to try.

Greetings from the critique club!

Hi there. This is a lovely mother/son study which I'm sure this family will treasure. As for DPC, I think the image is lacking a dynamic punch which would have helped it to score better. The soft desat on the main picture is nice, but then looks pale and lacking contrast when compared to the other two. Perhaps b/w on the larger image would have made that difference seem more intentional and would give your image a little more drama.

Hope that helps. Good luck with your future entries.

I like the use of the large canvas with the smaller inserts, though I think you could have given just a bit more space (not a lot more) to the inserts - let us see the people just a bit more. Looks like a great day, too, by the way.

I really like the framing overall and I like how the background image is desaturated. As an experiment, try it with the insets zoomed in much more, so it's like looking through a magnifying glass. Use the large background pic to set the scene, and the insets to give us a more intimate look at them. Also, try two different shots showing them exploring, as opposed to a second shot of them sitting.

Basically, have fun with the format and introduce some variety. :)

Nice sequence of photos... very charming. The color seems a little dull though, which also happens to my photos. They look good on my screen and then seem to dull up after I upload them.
