Hello from the Critique Club:

Since I couldn̢۪t vote in this challenge, this is the first time I̢۪ve had a chance to look at your image. My first impression was that this was a nice image of a car and that it would probably score around a 5. What really hurt your score IMHO is that the background in this image does not look like a car ad. Add to the less than flattering background, the car needs more space around it to give the impression that you could buy this car and drive off with it if so desired. I like your post processing and I think it would have worked with the appropriate background. Overall, the lack of a car ad feel to this image made it easy for the voter to give it a 5 and move on, as shown by the voting histogram where almost half of your votes are 5.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions regarding this critique.

Hello from the Critique Club:

Since I couldn̢۪t vote in this challenge, this is the first time I̢۪ve had a chance to look at your image. My first impression was that this was a nice image of a toy car and that it would probably score around a 5. You did a nice job with the lighting and you tried to make the image interesting with the shallow depth of focus. As you can see from the comments you received, the shallow depth of focus is a love it or hate it kind of effect. Toys don̢۪t score very well at DPC unless it is for a toy related challenge or the image is exceptionally creative. This is even truer for a challenge where the voters expect to see a real car in an ad type setting. Overall, the subject matter (toy), composition (straight on), and lack of dramatic lighting created an image that is good but not exciting and easy for the voter to give it a 5 and move on.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions regarding this critique.

Back to comment: A very creative idea and nicely done. If you could have changed the lighting just a bit to provide some detail in the flower pedals, it would have been exceptional. 7

Back to comment: The tension created by having the chair face the outside of the image is wonderful. I would have like to see a bit more white to the snow. Nice job. 8

I think you found a wonderful subject for this challenge. However, the lighting needs to be a bit more dramatic (maybe a bit more from the side) and the image could use more contrast for my taste. This could be a result of your conversion method to B&W (desat only). If so, take a look in the tutorial section. There is a great tutorial on B&W conversion.

Love the patterns and contrast in this image. If this was my image I would have cropped out the locked box at the top. It competes with the meters for my attention. 6

Back to comment: The effect of the long exposure time on the water produced a wonderful focal point for this image. Without it, this would just be another pretty landscape. You hit the challenge description right on the head and earned a 10 from me. Nice job!
