Afternoon Lightby AliciaComment: You remind me that photos which imitate poster-like qualities are attractive. I learn from you that the backlit silhouette and the diffused view, like the low DPI printing of posters when one views them close up, are assets to be exploited by the artist and photographer. |

Week 6by chris48083Comment: Positioning within a frame, separation of subject from non-subject, is what I think and learn about from your photo. You also remind me that the rhythmic repetitions of objects (such as the machine heads) can be useful in composition. |

Week 5 - Cartesiaby wickee_oneComment: What I learn from your photo is about giving the subject dignity, yet sharing that intimate, private moment with the viewer. Not always an easy composition to do. But you did and I learned. |

by MephistoComment: Sometimes photography is all about lack of light and the quality of darkness. In a friend's used bookstore in Brooklyn recently, he showed me a prized photography book ($200 out of print) in which the artist had taken many photos of the Arctic Sea - all of which were very close on being totally black. Just the merest small areas of sea or ice or... were lit. The paper the book was printed on was perfect for such images. They stayed in the mind, barely. I the viewer looked harder. I think I glimpsed something apart from the photos. Your photo reminds me of that enlightenment. The quality of the darkness is beautiful, as is its shape and the subject in the light. I was commenting on these bw images and came to yours about a week ago and it stopped me in my tracks. I know I appreciated it but I had to think on it a while.... now I can get on to the many other images submitted. I will have to pay you tuition in beer sometime, someplace ;-) |

Fog Fishin'by jjstager2Comment: Photographing morning mist and fog is a funny old thing, is it not? Reproducing the beauty that is evident first had and making it the same or better with a digital camera is not so easy. Back lighting with the sun as it comes over a hill works well. But if there is no sun one has to work on the moody feeling of low light.
One thing I notice with this image is - if you take a close look - the processing you used has left circles along the top part. Perhaps you were using burn in Photoshop and instead of running along the entire section you stopped and clicked. I think you need to remove those circles since they are a dead give away. |

Camaro Rear Viewby PixlmakerComment: The beauty of car shows is that they are well lit because the vendors want people to see and admire their wares. But shooting in auditoriums etc is where the 5D is really a blessing. Even at ISO 1600 the noise is relatively low. But a faster lens than an f/4.0 is certainly in order. The 50mm f/1.4 does the job. f/2.8 lenses, such as the 24-70mm f/2.8, in such circumstances feel slow. Looks like you had fun there. |

sunday at the mallby rozComment: This is a pretty remarkable image without the overlays... The exposure is spot on, for my taste that is. And it is a socially interesting composition with a spark to it - even though it is an everyday view. ETA that I think the anonymity you preserved by silhouettes and partial views of such a good number of people adds greatly to this photo. Message edited by author 2008-02-11 14:12:57. |

Sun Go Downby Les_FeckComment: Red sun go down way over dirty town
Starling are sweeping around crazy shoals
A girl is there high heeling across the square
Wind blows around in her hair and the flags upon the poles
Waiting in the crowd to cross at the light
She looks around to find a face she can like.
-- Mark Knopfler, Dire Straits, 1978
It's funny how one immediately knows this is a reflection - despite the original building not being in the frame. |

IMG_9144.jpgby jwillertonComment: I'm learning from your photo - this and the bw entry. The bw edition is certainly more complimentary from the model's point of view. I think what I am learning about is positioning of the lights, proximal and distal, near and far, and the background distance. Also I might be understanding the use of flagging - light blocking. Thanks for the tuition... |
