New storyby BrinComment: I can't figure out your choice of title, but I love the shot itself. I wonder how it would have looked if the rear tire was elevated to the same level as the front thereby producing a similiar round image using the reflection. |

Light Speed Travel!by erikingComment: Great idea, but it took me awhile to figure out that I was looking at a train. The tracks are not immediately noticeable, so if it was composed to show more of the crossing then it would have been more recognizable that the light was from a train. |

by melissa111083Comment: Simple and serene, I like the almost perfectly matching colors of the blue sky and the calm water. Look up "The rule of thirds". This rule suggests that you place you subject in the frame on the intersection of one each of two vertical and two horizontal imaginary lines drawn through the photo. IMO the picture would benefit from the sailboat being in the upper left a little, leaving some space in front of the boat. Also, check the level of your horizon. This is one of the first criticisms that you'll receive.
I hope that you don't mind, but while I was trying to explain this, the thought occurred to me that I could attempt to show you so I worked on it a little. It would have looked better if I had the original file to work with, but the point was mostly about not centering your subject.
What I did was to crop the photo to level the horizon and moved the saiboat towards the upper left third without cropping too much off the photo. After you learn more about composition, you won't have to crop as much because you'll take care of that befoe you press the shutter button. I also adjusted the levels, contrast and saturation a little. |

Cascadeby melissa111083Comment: WOW! This one I like a lot. What a great location to get a shot of. You have composed this shot very well. I love how the course of the water zigzags from side to side before finally pouring through the center near the bottom of the photo. Also, I don't know if it was intentional or not to include the person in the bottom right, but sometimes (as in this case) it helps to show something that lets the viewer realize the scale of what they are looking at. This cascade wouldn't seem as large without the person to compare sizes with. |

by melissa111083Comment: Hey Melissa, welcome to DPChallenge. I'm very happy to be the first person to comment on your first photo uploaded to your portfolio. This butterfly was a great find with all the colors and contrast. It appears that you were able to get pretty close to it to capture such detail. The lighting, colors, and exposure are all very good. The only suggestion for improvement that I can see is that the focus is in the same plane as the plant on the right or the bark of the tree instead of the butterfly itself.
You're off to a good start. Keep it up and post some more good shots. |
