I had a cool comment from Ecce Signum aimed at cheering me up - it did, but unfortunately I currently feel as though I have broken ribs, and laughing is somewhat painful. Andi, you are now responsible for me having to resort to the codeine bottle again! But thanks, you did cheer me up.

OK, it sounds like we will do our week from Thursday morning and end it Wednesday night. So, tonight ends week 4 and everyone can be posting their week 5 photos starting tomorrow.

All right, now I am excited - I am going to be changing my scenery this week and traveling, so I should have some good opportunities for taking some photos.

Had an idea for week 5 but if it works well I may sneak it into a challenge so, looks like you guys might have to spend another week looking at me (with prop this time) hmm, maybe I'm in the wrong side challenge lol

Too many words, not enough pictures :P

Glad I checked the thread tonight so I would know today was the last day of the first week! I thought that would be Friday at the earliest; but I did check, so here's my first image:

This is going to be fun. And oh, this looked better toned a little, but I left it as is for now :)

P.S. Bud, can you change my name in the first post? I changed my username from rheverly to Bruce_the_Robert. Why? Um, it's a long story . . .

Guess I won't have a week 4 photo. Or perhaps I'll just be late. I was thinking I had a couple of more days. The ones I have played with so far haven't satisfied me.

Put it in when you can. We're all behind on weeks 1-3! :-)

Yes, Melethia is exactly right. Life happens. So, we do our best to keep up, but if not, we post when we can and get back on track when we can.

Ok, since this is the last day of week one, I pulled a previously taken photo, and did a B&W conversion on it. Next week, I'll try to get out and get something fresh. Conversion done in Lightroom.

Week 2

If you look closely, you will see a smallish building behind the sugar beet warehouse. This is the building that yielded the texture photo from week one. I also got a rare glimpse inside this little building that I have shown elsewhere. I may do a longish study of this building and this area, I am fascinated and drawn to it.

I have done some further research on this building and have found it has a wonderful rich history full of scandal an misery. The full history can be found here. It may be more interesting to me, as i live here, but means you poor people are forced to see more of this building than you ever hoped for.

The small building to the side where the young men had a auto body business is the old boiler building.

In case you are wondering what I did, here is what I did.
(I am using photoshop)
1. duplicated the background layer.
2. Select this duplicated layer.
3. Filter->Render->Lens Flare
4. 50-300mm zoom, set the center at the bulb location, adjust brightness (i used 115%) and apply it
5. change the blending mode of this layer to overlay. Adjust opacity to your taste and details (here you could save the details if you wish).
6. Flatten the image. and export.

As we start week 5, here are a couple links that may provoke some thoughts and also be helpful.

This is a link to a DPC thread that discusses B&W images and photography. The thread specifically discusses the B&W tutorial. What is worthy of note is the comment by e301. The comment is about 2/3's of the way down page 1 of the thread.

B&W Thread

Here is a link to a Simple Tutorial. I took this off the thread posted above.

What is the best book on B&W photography that you would recommend? I am looking for a good book on this subject and would appreciate some suggestions.

I have this book and it's pretty good, although I can't say it's the best since it's the only one I have.

That is really interesting! I've already posted my week 2, but I'm definitely taking his advice and will try that going forward. His work speaks for itself. Enough said, right? Thanks e301

I have it, too. Like mad_brewer, it's the only one I have, so I really don't have a basis for comparison, but I've found it very useful.

I also use desaturate to make my images b/w. I don't use the gradient map like I learned in another thread yesterday. Gradient Layer legal in basics? That really made things much darker in areas that I didn't want to be darker. Maybe I just need to mess with it more.
