It's a very good thing this side challenge started - I was just about to enter a really cool image that I loved in the "Old Ways" challenge that would get soundly beaten down. Instead, I decided to pull it. This way, I can bring it to the folks that can either appreciate it or tell me what i need to fix...i can't wait to post it as my week 2 entry...

I heard about this from Sandy -- Sandy, I'm following you around :)))). I'm wondering, I'm late, but I'd like to join if that's OK. One of my goals for this year is to get good (or at least better) at B&W. This would be a good opportunity to practice.

Great that you stopped by. We are glad to have your company throughout the year.

I just PM'ed aguapreta this afternoon, and he said that it wasn't too late. I've been wanting to do one of these side challenges, but really didn't have the time to submit a photo per day. I think I can keep up with one B&W per week. Anyway, this one looks like a lot of fun, and I need to improve my B&W skills.

I wished to see it bit more intense, something like this:

[thumb]639628[/thumb]

I did some dodging and burning.

Hmmmm. . . not quite sure. I kind of like the soft smootheness of Zxaar's -- but I think maybe too much detail is lost?? It kind of blurs more together. What do y'all think?

Its little blurry and the reason for it is I applied blurring to it.
The reason I said I wished it to be more intense was, the original image looked flatter to me. I felt if the blacks were more blacks and white were more white, then it would make more impact than what it is now. So just downloaded and did to see it.
I usually download people's image and do PP on them, just as a part of learning. Hope people do not mind it.
Its my way of learning, in fact I wish other would also did something from their side and shared it. It would be great to see how everyone sees and do same things. (kinda ppchallenge thingy, but with images of our choice).

Confined to the house with pleurisy, so here is a re-working of one from my holiday in Corfu last year.

This thread was started Saturday morning in DPC time, so I'm guessing that was the kickoff of Week 1.

I love this enthusiasm!

We actually started posting in the thread on Saturday morning. I have debated about when to run the week myself, so here is my idea.

Let's run the week from Thursday morning to Wednesday night. This will make the side challenge end with the last day of the year (Dec 31st is a Wednesday). Also, I labeled my first week 4 - (Title). From now on, I will follow that sequence.

This seems like the best way of dealing with a year long side challenge and keeping it organized. And potentially if someone is thinking of doing something with these images in the future and this may help with the project.

So, to keep everyone on the same page, the week "ends" on Wednesday night and the new week "begins" on Thursday morning. Does that sound all right?

4? Why not 1? (I'm very easily confused.) Or do we have three to make up for the first three weeks of January? :-)

Ummmm, I don't know. I guess because last week was actually the 4th week of the year? But, that doesn't mean a whole lot in the scheme of things. Any feedback from anyone else?

It would be nice to have everyone follow the same pattern.

You have my vote. Looks like the most practical choice.

Have labelled my first submission [wk4] as well. Maybe (for those that wish) during the course of the year they can submit weeks 1-3 as well (not all at once mind as I plan on commenting on every submission!).

Mine has been relabeled as well. I will probably sneak in shots from week 1 through 3 throughout the year - but again won't burden everyone all at once. I know I have enough shots to use!

Woo Hoo! I am so SO glad you are here!! I think I'm the one following you around :) I can't get enough of your tutoring and advice. Now, a whole year of black and whites to share and grow from. Yayyy!!!

Ok Sandy, you have successfully recruited me too :) Is it too late to jump on board for this? If not then here is my week 1 shot. I will also sneak in 3 extra weeks along the way so I've titled mine starting with week 4...

Themed Freestudy, isn't than an oxymoron? ;o)

Actually you can pick the theme too, so it really is free :) Your theme has to be specific though...For example, you could pick a theme of "My Oak Tree through the seasons" decide on 4 photos and shoot once in the winter, spring, summer and fall. I actually thought about planting a tree and having my next themed free study be 1 photo per year for 10 years from the same view....now that would be a long term commitment!

Sorry for all this banter in the image posting thread....
