There is a wonderful water fountain down near where the cruise ships used to come into port in San Pedro. The same guy who did the fountains at the Bellagio in Las Vegas did this little fountain here. Every half hour or so in the evenings, the fountains come to life and "perform" routines to music. The kids love to run up and down and play in the water (you can walk down the middle between two raised pools of water) as the fountains do their thing. This young man seemed to be conducting in time to the music, with grand sweeps of his arms through the shallow water of the fountain. Quite delightful.

(Note that I said the cruise ships used to come here. At some point this spring, they stopped. I miss seeing them docked there on the weekends. Apparently it was a combination of the economy with fewer people taking cruises and the violent situation in Mexico that sealed the fate of our little port.)

VERY pleased with the comments (and favs) on this - thanks so much! Also, a special shout out to Paul and Mark for the cropping suggestion. I'm an anal retentive engineer/creature of habit and I tend to a) see the scene as I saw it, not how it could best be presented, and b) prefer to crop to keep an aspect ratio. I think 5x7 would work here to cut out the foreground water.

Thanks for all the wonderful comments!!

Love the intensity. And then there is the water. And the black and white, and the composition.

Wow... there's such a dramatic sense to this - the contrasts, the layers, the two large subjects - this is excellent!

Very interesting shot. I like the tones on his skin and motion of the water. The white band across the bottom at a slight angle is bit of a distraction.

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: Amazing range of contrasts here - high and stark bottom right and low top left. A really difficult lighting situation, rendered perfectly at your hand. His expression is sublime - expressing a pure moment. The image overall is highly dynamic, frozen it may be but remains communicative of movement and life.

Critical stuff: I wonder if a crop into the lowest part of the darkness may have been effective.

Overall: Lovely (even masterful) stuff.

I love the figure and the splash but the fountain's white on white with no tones just drags the image down.
