...from Critique Club...

Hi John

FIRST IMPRESSION:
Nice lines.

COMPOSITION:
Interesting enough. Like most, I did miss the bird at the first look...maybe cause it's so close to the frame and in the back of all the 'metal madness'. :|

TECHNICAL:
Man, I don't think you want me to repeat what everyone has already said? :) Noise, sky too bright, noise, digi zoom, noise. I do think that the focus is fair enough...unless you sharpened the photo to do that...which would create noise :)

ARTISTIC:
John, I think that at the moment you took this you did see something quite unusual, and I have to agree with you. There is something is this image that is quite attractive...the nature element contrasting with man-made-industrial element. Nicely seen.

OVERALL:
I know that you know what went wrong. :( ..and you still didn't come last :)

Best of luck in the future. Don't hesitate to PM me if you have any questions about this critique.

Cheers...zadore.

a great example of a good idea gone horribly awry (sorry to say this, you two, but at least i wasn't last)

The concept of the pic is pretty good. I don't like how it looks grainy, out of focus. The sky is really washed out, considering it is the sky. The bird is not particularly well captured either. You could've increased the saturation to make him really stand out. Inspzil

This is a potentially good abstract image. It is so grainy, though, that it's distracting. Did you use digital zoom? That may be why. Try taking a large-sized image further away, and crop it smaller. Good luck! :)

It seems like your camera is a bit low end and you did some despeckle on it. I don't mind that, it creates a kind of watercolour effect that I like :). The composition of this photo is spot on, in my opinion. I can't get enough of rusty girders and bits of old machinery, as long as they're arranged in an interesting way. The bird is a great touch... juxtaposing nature against artifice. I like it :). Lots of flair, even if the photo is technically flawed.

A bit too grainy but interesting lines shown in the composition

Ooops, I completely missed the bird the first time around! The structure itself is interesting I think, but it is really grainy to me. Did you use digital zoom or crop it from a larger pic? Or did you intend it to be that way? I'm not sure, but converting it to black and white might help some since the sky is so white and the colors are almost monotone anyway.

Kinda grainy, possibly you might want to consider turning off your digital zoom, too (I need to as well!) Sharpness is pretty good, esp. considering the grain, so you have a steady hand. Interest, for me is on the lower side. Sorry, 5 Swash

Good zoom. The sky seems oversaturated. Composition is good.

Interesting but extremely grainy... did you shoot this from the ground up, then crop it a whole bunch... The patterns are neat, but I don't understand the title, because birds look down at things, not up. good try.

I like the patterns created by the stucture. The picture looks as though there is a lot of noise in it and the details are not very strong. I get this kind of look when I use the digital telephoto on my camera. The background is a bit too stark for my taste - perhaps an adjustment of the brightness/contrast to make it a bit softer would help. = 5

Interesting image with lots of diagonals and some curves thrown in for good measure.

I suspect that the camera is the limiting factor for this shot, but it might have been worth running a image cleanup like NeatImage over this shot to remove some of the grainyness. Also, if possible, a closer crop on the bird would help make it the main focus of the image, rather than being hidden by the metalwork.

AWESOME!! What kind of telephoto did you use to get this clear of a picture this high up? The bird is beautiful. Fantastic photo.
12/10/2002 11:30:17 PM
A lot of nois, and the colours could be a bit more saturated.
12/10/2002 11:26:39 PM
not very sharp... did you use the digital zoom? that always gives me similar results
12/09/2002 10:41:53 PM
poor picture quality (Digital zoom?). Interesting picture. The quality of the image takes away from the picture a lot.
12/09/2002 08:24:00 PM
looks like it might have been blown up a little too much with grain showing across most of the photo.
12/09/2002 05:55:49 PM
Too busy and too soft for the viewers eye to focus............
12/09/2002 02:45:39 PM
An interesting angle, but the pixel-y colors distract. Perhaps this photo has been oversharpened? Oh! I just noticed the bird -- I didn't even see that before, unfortunately. I just thought this was a shot of something a bird would be looking at. Maybe this would be more effective in B/W since the sky color is so washed out already?
12/09/2002 02:41:24 PM
The sky on this is quite white out and the photo seems to contain speckles. (noise?) It might be the brightness of the sky in the background that makes the focus look soft. The patterns are nice though, and the angle and framing/cropping you chose is nice. Good luck in the challenge.

Good photographers eye. We walk past things like this everyday, and never stop to notice the textures, and shapes.
12/09/2002 01:09:55 PM
Too much zoom noise :-)
12/09/2002 01:25:42 AM
Wish the bird was a little more in focus. Look like it had a little more saturation than needed??
