Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Henri Cartier-Bresson (Minimal Editing I)
Collection: Challenges: People, Other
Camera: Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3
Location: Big Sur, California
Date: May 23, 2011
Aperture: f/2.8
ISO: 80
Shutter: 1/125
Date Uploaded: May 25, 2011

Used the B&W Dynamic setting on the Lumix for all my HCB challenge shots, including this. I find it to be a really nice setting (and camera) for street type photography.

Just moments before this I had changed the default to get three bracketed exposures. As I followed Robert (Bear_music) through this culvert under route 1 in Big Sur, I liked the circular patterns and especially the moment of leaving the dark for the light. Robert did not know that I was taking these. If it had been "staged" I would have asked him to keep his camera out of sight!! (although perhaps it is only obvious once you know who it is). Fortunately the best exposed image was also the one I found most interesting in terms of the position of his feet etc.

I had this pegged for a ribbon. Had no idea that was Bear - I thought it was Wilford Brimley. ;-)

Back to comment... I think maybe this was setup (though I could be wrong), but it still works well! 9

Excellent exposure control and very good in-camera framing, sharpening, contrast, etc. I'm sure there's some analogy (walking into the light?) one can attribute to this, but I appreciate it mostly for thelight, the crossed lines of the braces, the circle. Very nice use of form and structure.

I really like how you've captured the light in this one. It's a tiny bit much at the tunnel exit but the lines of light and shadow in the rest of the image are wonderful. This shot feels right.
