Some VERY astute observations from commenters!!

Observation 1: Low Light
Yes, the lighting conditions were appalling. It was the end of the (extremely fun) shoot and the model wanted "just one more" set-up. But because our original shoot was outdoors with natural daylight, I hadn't brought any strobes or flashes for indoor shooting (lesson #1). It was by now evening, and this was the brightest overhead light they had in the house. So I quickly pushed some furniture around to place her under it, spotted the lamp and added that, and had her change into this dress (yes, I have a huge trunk of wardrobe I schlep around). Regardless, I still had to shoot at some obscenely high ISO. Perhaps the on-board flash would have worked, if I'd moved further back and zoomed in, but it didn't occur to me at the time.

Observation 2: cluttered composition
Yup, it was even worse without the mirror, which served both to block out the rest of the jumble in the room and some incredibly distracting patio doors in the back, and had the added benefit of increasing the amount of available light just a bit. It also happened to be gold - a fact that didn't occur to me until I got home and started editing. It wasn't until then that I realized it could work for the gold challenge, which I hadn't even planned to enter.

Finally, this was basic editing...

Ah, the mysteries of DPC. This was an image I DIDN'T think would do well. Thank you all for such splendid feedback and votes. Cheyenne will be delighted.

Way to go! This is a lovely photo, the gold tones are perfect for this and not so forced as mine.

I was wondering if this was you! I think it's a marvelous shot! I would have cropped off the top of the mirror to bring the focus in a little more, but the gold tones are perfect! (I was one of your 8s. :)

nice going, Johanna! the flow of hair and the flow of the dress (a nice dress!) fit well together. And adding mirror was a great call

beautiful composition and presentation, maybe a tad too soft, but nice

This is nice; excellent composition and placement of the figure, the eye goes from the shoulder near the light to the tip of the toe- but perhaps the biggest drawback is the mirror- it gives balance but also seems compositionally irrelevant and makes the shot a bit busy.

i like the setup but the lightning was probably too low on your picture and i can see you added a lot of brightness the result is good but if you look at the leg you can see the desaturation

Great idea, and beautiful posing. I love how her hair falls over the near shoulder to bury her in mystery. But the over-exposed table lamp is killing it for me. Usually you don't want anything in a frame to be brighter than the main subject, or it pulls the attention away from the main subject.
