Model: Mel Gorham and Isabella.

What a fun, fabulous, creative, productive, epic 5-hour shoot. I directed Mel in a play in 2005 and we've been friends since. She is so talented and adventurous. Isabella is the BEST dog EVER. Very protective of Mel, she thought the strobes were evil and barked every time they flashed. There was a lot of barking. She also thinks she's a lap dog...

Oh boy, it's going to be a long week. Been over 6 and almost under 5 every other vote. I'm going to have a very funky voting pattern :-)

[post challenge]

I'm so happy that the joyous emotion was transmitted to you!! I considered the lighting before submitting but there was something about it being out of the ordinary and not in all the right places that somehow really spoke to me. Ah well. I have gone back and re-edited it, and I've also turned it into a b/w. It's just a fun image.

Thanks SO much for all your wonderful comments and votes.

A reworked color version, and a b/w version.

joie de vivre and just the tiniest hint of sex, in a tasteful politically correct way.

This is yours?? I LOVE it! In fact I had a big discussion with someone about it - me pointing out how this is cleverly cool, where the other person (who clearly doesn't know colors) was saying it was warmish. So delightful, Johanna!!

I really like this shot - lovely interplay between Mel and Isabelle . . there is a whole story there waiting to come out :-)

What makes this image great is the pose of the dog :) Gave this an 8. The lighting is a tad harsh on her left leg all the way down to her shoe which may have been one of the reasons it didn't do better. Also, her dress is pink which is not a perfect fit in a cool challenge which is perhaps another big reason that you got some low votes.

7 from me. It's a wonderful mix of contrived and unguarded.

Nah, the voting pattern looks pretty normal :-) You ended up with a decent score for an image that fights the banality of coolness and marches to the beat of its own drummer.

A delightful joyous play of form and expressions, I just wish a cooler light was used to coll the warm skin tones. Best image of the challenge if not the best fit for the challenge. Ought to ribbon.

I don't know what's going on, but I like it. It's all a bit strange, the dog's pose, and look to the right, and her large smile, and left gaze, the one missing shoe. It all allows for a ton of interpretations.

on the formal side, I wish the do had a bit more exposure. I can see this working well in b&w as well.

Love this shot, but her left leg is getter to much light

There's too much light in her legs and it makes them the point of attraction instead of her face, which by the way has a nice expression.

This is a photo filled with a joyful emotion. There are some lighting problems though. The light fades off to the left of the image a lot giving it an unbalanced feel. The dog is in too much shadow in my opinion and the brightest spot is on the woman's mid section. My eye is drawn to just about her knee which is not really where you want the focal point. The lack of back-lighting is noticeable. Great staged shot and lot's of fun! Good colors!

I find this to be totally adorable. It would NOT have been as appealing to me without the dog...it's just that "something unexpected" that surprises you. Nicely done.

What a dog! The dog I mean. The model looks great. :-)

Great concept and composition. While the highlights on her leg are almost blown, there should be a bit more light on her face. I don't understand why she wears only one shoe, that rather distracts me (too artsy, maybe).Overall very well done, ribbon contender.

Nice dog BTW.
