 Handheld using my Sigma 50-500 racked out to 500 (about a 50% crop presented). Is it perfect? No, but I'm fairly pleased with the result overall. These woodpeckers are pretty shy and will spook even quicker than crows do. Maneuvered my way to a small opening between some leaves/branches to kneel down and get this shot.

The Holy Grail of Woodpeckers! I always feel lucky when I spot one of these guys. Definitely would have cropped this shot tighter to get rid of most of the OOF foreground.

OMG I saw one of these in my back yard, always heard the name but had no idea what it really was.. Thanks for the education lesson! And I know this wasn't an easy capture! NICE
