WOW! I never expected a fourth place in a Free Study, especially after the free-fall the score seemed like it was taking on the last day. Thanks for all of the kind votes and comments. It is a very nice way to break out of my longest string of sub-6s since I started at DPC.

I missed a ribbon by 0.0005. Had I voted the 3rd place image a 7 instead of an 8, or simply not voted at all, it would have been a ribbon shot. Bummer.

For those who asked, this was taken while standing in the middle of Broadway at about 53rd Street. How did I stand in the middle of Broadway and survive to tell about it? NYC has weekend street fairs April thru November, and they close off streets for blocks at a time. This one was on Broadway, between 47th & 57th.

I also had a color version. I'm glad I didn't enter it. My brother, daughter & wife talked me in to submitting the black & white.

PERFECT title :-) Hard to believe there could be quite so many signs in one place, but then it is NYC.

Fabulous use of DOF. Brings new magic to a very familiar scene. Feels like they're floating, racing toward me...

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: This works really well. The even illumination and superb clarity elevates this image above a shot of a street scene - you've created something that didn't necessarily come across in the real scene. You've have found and distilled the sign elements and have brought them all together, like a single image montage (oxymoronic though that may be). I like how you've kept above the people space - inviting us to 'look up' and see what you created above our heads.

Critical stuff: Nothing at all.

Overall: Pretty inspired and bold to boot.

Fantastic image. The processing is amazing. All the signs pop, razor sharp, yet there's a dreamy feel with the steam and tones. Excellent work.
