Challenge: Tilted III (Basic Editing)
Camera: Pentax K10D
Lens: Pentax DA 50-200 ED
Location: Sleeping Bear Dunes, MI
Date: Jun 18, 2010
Aperture: f/6.3
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/800

Date Uploaded: Jun 22, 2010

This shot was rotated about 20 degrees or so (don't remember exactly). The girl in the shot is really crawling up a sand dune. The water below is Lake Michigan. The location is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

This is a tricky optical illusion if you're trying to figure out the tilt aspect of it. But the trick is, she is roughly 300-350ft above the lake. The dune, from top to bottom, has a 450ft vertical. This section of the dune is very steep and most people that climb back up have to crawl on all fours.

If you tilt the shot CCW by making the girl and foreground bokeh level, the shore of the lake makes the girl appear like the size of an actual peanut on the sand. But those waves coming in are around 300ft away - which really throws you for a loop.

Unfortunately, I wish I had stopped it down a few more notches to make the foreground more in-focus.(cropping after rotating wouldn't work with this one) If that area was more clear, this would be a very tricky looking shot.

A ribbon for a shot that I almost didn't enter. Go figure! I was telling my Viewfinder teammates that I thought this was good for only about a 5.1. The funny thing is, I really don't like the shot all that much. I only submitted it for the optical illusion aspect of it.

I'll never figure this place out. :-)

This is so amazing! I'm sure glad you went against your hunch and entered it. The only thing that suprises me is that you didn't see ribbon written all over this one the minute you saw it :) Congratulations!! It is so deserving of its win!

Very nice work - I almost get the odd sense of vertigo in this - and that is quite a challenge with a series of straight lines. Well seen and delivered. Congrats on the ribbon.
