This photo is actually a slice of a shot looking down a purple plastic sewer pipe.

Played with white balance, various enhancements and crops until I liked what I saw. Looks to me like the sun, hence the title, which is Japanese for "Rising Sun". (If I am incorrect about that, I'm sure someone who understands Japanese will correct me)

Not expecting this to do more than a mediocre score in this challenge. Even though the topic strikes me as abstract friendly, I know how abstracts tend to fare in anything but a pure abstract challenge. The success of this entry will be measured in the appeal to the crowd that likes such things, and how it fares with the jury.

Anticipated critiques:
-Can't tell what it is
-Don't like the narrow crop
-Off center comp doesn't work, should have pulled all of the subject into the frame. (Not possible with this one, then you would see the stacked sewer pipes on the other end)

Post-challenge notes:
Very pleased with this, especially considering I expected it to do mediocre. I guess I made some tasty eye candy this time.

looks like a Damien Hirst spin-art painting, which have made him millions in his lifetime!

I guess I made some tasty eye candy this time.

How about, "I just like it. This passes my 'I'd hang it on my wall' test."

I have to "pipe up" and say that this is just marvelous, in color and composition. Now it has 3 faves.

Absolutely beautiful!

It is my feeling that Fine Art goes outside the bounds of "is it a photo or is it digital art?". It simply doesn't matter. Fine Art is ART no matter the form.

Fine Art should answer one simple question: Would I hang this on my wall and enjoy viewing it?

In the case of your image my answer to that question is absolutely YES! It's a well-done image on so many levels. If I had had a chance to vote, this would have been a unequivocal, solid 10.

Sorry for the strange comment. I was trying to comment on all images but ran out of time. Some of my comments were abridged ;) I thought it was great - and it was tough to see how it was a photo and not digital art. Not a bad thing by any means. I actually like it more knowing the context / object.

Well, you seem to be doing quite well lately. I guessed wrong.
Hinomaru is the name of the Japanese flag and in effect means "round sun".

Enjoyable abstract, red:yellow-orange works well, smooth:radial/circular makes interersting contrast. Makes me think of the sun.

My guess is that it's a (Japanese) umbrella being spun.

I like this one. The red space with the blast of color streaking out works well imo

I had to Google it, but that's okay.....I like it when an image appeals to me enough to make me bother to go forth and learn......nice.....8

7 - Nice abstract. Seems like only part of a 'set' though. Up to 7 from 6.

Appropriate choice of high aspect ratio for this image. A very pleasing image. I find it simultaneously both calming and stimulating!

I don't actually get the Hinomaru from this image. At any rate, abstraction may work as fine art, but here it does not, in my opinion. I enjoy messages from photos considered to be fine art. They don't have to be deep messages, and certainly shouldn't be obvious, but something must be said. What's being said here?

This is so cool! i am really loving voting on this challenge so far i am liking everything i see. This is very nice but theres a "but" unfortunately :P
I'm not to keen on the narrow vertical nature of the shot. But thats just me, still a nice piece of art. I def would have scored you higher with a wider and less vertical image.
