No, this airplane is not flying. It was mounted on the housetop of the German Museum of Technology in Berlin. I used the overexposure of the sky to blur the contours of the bow and the propeller blades a little bit. I hope, that viewers thereby are not realising this fake on the first view. Have you been had ;-)?

Yippee!!!! :-)

Sorry for answering so late. As my brother (stephan) told you already, I was a few days on holiday. Thanks a lot for all your comments on my shot and for your congratulations on the ribbon. I am very surprised at getting first place, but I like the feeling and I could become accustomed to it ;-). The plane was not flying, all you wanted to know you can read in the photo details. If there are more questions, please feel free to ask me here. Sorry also to the runners-up, that I have 'stolen' your ribbon with such a cheap trick... ;-)

@ PTLParsons
I didn't crop this shot, and I have no other version, where you can see the wings. Sorry, but I decided to use a vertical composition. I think, that the lines of the building thereby are much more impressive, because they are leading the eye better to the main subject.

Very good shot and had me fooled. Showed it to an 11 year-old today and he knew right away the plane was attached. The wisdom of children! Congratulations!!

A worthy winner - the converging lines lead you straight to the 'what the!' moment at the top

I looked at this pic several times but it never once occured to me that the plane was attached to the building! Brilliant, and a well-deserved first place.

My brother (nds) asked me to tell you that he's out of town until wednesday and won't be able to thank you personally. He'll do that as soon as he arrives. But I think I don't say something wrong when telling you that he's very very happy :-)

Wow! THis is a great perspective, and quite an amazing image. The only improvement I would like to see would be to sharpen it a little. But anyway this is very, very good! Grayce

Nice picture of someone elses art... no, no just kidding ;-) Great composition! I also like the colour tone. A bit overexposed, because the propellers disappear in the sky and the "nose" of the plane loses its edges. -stephan

An awesome, amazing shot. The center composition works great. I really like the abstract feel to it, with all the lines and angles, as well as the areas of light and dark. Either your timing is incredible, or you waited through a lot of shots to get this! lhall

This was a 1st place shot. Wish you had not cropped it this tight, or used a wide angle lens if you had too. the angle of the shot is awesome. Good light, good focus, great subject matter, good composition with the exception of the tips of the wings. Love this shot. Absolutely love it. It is one of a kind. Definitely has the "Wow" and pizzaz that grabs you. With the wings it is my very favorite one ever. If you have any with the wings e-mail them to me. Still worth a 9 but should have been a 10. PTL Keep coming back to it and what the heck it deserves the 10 in spite of my little pettiness. Great job beautifully done. You deserve the 10.

Really nice. Was this plane attached to the tower or was it actually flying over?
  Photographer found comment helpful.
11/20/2002 08:43:00 PM
Perfectly executed! If I find out later that this plane was flying over and not actually affixed to the building I think I will roll over and die of shear adulation. (Hope it's affixed :)) 10

This is either a great shot of a plane mounted at the top of the building, or you are one lucky photographer. I suspect the former, but the pic seems to show spinning propellors. Either way, an excellent picture. 9

Okay, I'll admit it took me a second of "Okay, how on earth did (s)he catch the plane at that perfect moment, and in that perfect symetry?" Too early in the morning I suppose. I really like the colour, and the photo really grabs the veiwer. Excellent.

Great composition! I especially like the way the image is on the lighter side of the tonal range, it gives it airy and light feel. Again a great photograph.

I love the "technical" feeling of this shot. It seems so exact. The color is a bit odd to me (all the same muted gray), so I am assuming you either meant to do that, or my monitor is off (could very likely be the latter). 10 karmat

Fantastic. Tell me you did it without using burst mode! Symmetry can often be a bit boring in a picture but I think it's the strength of this photo. Great stuff.

How really is this image? Is it staged? Fixed in place? Or, was it really flying?
