You know how much I love this picture. In color it's probably grand. But when reduced to greyscale all the magic of the greens disapear and the entire forground turns into negative space. I would have cropped the whole bottom half off and displayed it as a rectangle crop. Then colored one green tree on the far left to balance the shot between sky and barn. You were on the right track, but, I'm guessing your mind was still thinking in 'color' when working on the picture.

I think I would really like this if it was fully color or b/w. Good range of focus(looks slightly soft) and proper placement of the farmhouse. The tower in the upper left might have been cloned out for a more rural feel. I do see black blacks and white whites it's just that all the grays seem to be the same, leaving a feeling of tonal flatness.

If "land matters" why does the sky get the color? I could imagine the barn, surrounding trees and meadow in color, with the sky and the foreground as a black and white "border."

This looksl ike upstate New York off the thruway.
the subject barn/silo is so small and amidst a sea of blacks and grays that it might benfit from a stronger color i.e. bright red or marroon.

While very little is in color, leaving the sky in color detracts from the farm.

for this effect (good idea) I would have preferred a sharper object.
