Adjusted first with levels, then desaturated all the channels except the red, masked out some of the building background and removed the color. Saturated the reds, did brightness & contrast, then burned the whole image.

In order to make a good selective desat photo, you need to start with a good shot to make b/w. To make a good b/w shot you need to start with a shot that is exposed for good highlights. In this example your highlights are way blown out ruining the effect that you are trying to achieve.

Good idea but I wouldn't have focused on the whole plant. Maybe just a section of it. Can't really see the details of your selection

Right idea but too much clutter around the bush. Keep is simple and don't try to include too much.

In natural color, I bet this is a beautiful photo, but the flowers are just too small and lack detail to make a real impact in this challenge. The desat itself is OK - I don't know which technique you used - but it's just lacking that "wow" factor.
