Challenge: Best of 2009 (Advanced Editing VII*)
Camera: Canon EOS-1D Mark III
Lens: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS
Location: Pretoria/South Africa
Date: Dec 11, 2009
Aperture: F9
ISO: 100
Shutter: 40s
Galleries: Landscape, Nature
Date Uploaded: Jan 17, 2010

Well...Not really the best artistic shot and photo for 2009 but im sure with lots of entries that would take our breaths away with beauty in landscapes..I decided to post something different. I dont expect this to do very well as its simply a shot of a lightning bolt. Nevertheless it has impact and I hope people could just enjoy this for its raw power of nature rather than beauty.
Editing... One day I hope to post a pic and type a page full of all edits I have made..For now im still learning. Levels, exposure, contrast, saturation and Cropped about 2% to get rid of stray lightning on left that crept into the picture. Sharpened. Also got rid of some dust in the clouds to top middle.

After
A lot of people commented it was close.
Lens was set at 24mm and although it could have been closer, I decided it was time to pack up and in a real hurry I did. Thanks for all the kind comments.

Oooh... opportunity knocks: since you obviously know exactly where the lightning hit, you should check the spot for fulgurites. They can be very valuable if carefully excavated.

So much for lightning hitting the tallest nearby object. This guy hit the flat Earth with two trees only meters away.

Whoa!! Certainly looks like a best, artistic shot and photo to me. If you have better than that, you are my new hero! This is a breath-stealer for sure! Congratulations on such a fine finish in this amazing challenge, but even more for getting the shot!

This is the perfect lightning shot! And, you didn't get killed getting it. Congrats on a grand shot. The tree on the right compliments the bolt in both brightness and shape. Excellent! Fav'ing this one.

Either you have a long lens and unimaginable luck, or you had to change your pants after this shot. That looks scary close.

Amazing what they can do with special effects these days! Ha, just joking. Terrific catch, I like how my eye travelled down the length of the bolt and then that "wow" moment when I saw that the light touched the ground in front of you.

Powerful image! Ok, how many times have you heard that pun with this image. I can only image that your hearing was slightly deafened after this blast!

The image alone is not spectacular but with the lightning bolt, this photo is awesome! BB
