Challenge: Selective Desaturation (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Nikon D70
Location: Home Aqaurium
Date: Jun 19, 2004
Aperture: F/4.5
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 1/125 sec
Galleries: Animals, Water
Date Uploaded: Jun 19, 2004

His name is Fang.

Photographed in my aquarium, and then applied selective desat. I think it turned out well, looks kinda cool.

It's always hard to shoot fish in the aquarium, so I bumped up the ISO to 1600, so I could get a fast enough shutter speed (he's always moving), took the noise out with neatimage.. and it still looks sharp. I also spot edited some micro bubbles out.

He inhabits the aquarium with another clown fish, 4 green chromis, a cleaner shrimp, a yellow tang and some corals.

Shot with 18-70mm F/3.5-4.5 G

Alsmost looks 3-D. That's not lense bokeh is it? The blurring looks like it was photoshoped. Cool shot none the less.

Great shot maybe the subject is a little to central but still a real eye grabber.

Love the floating effect this image has created. Nicely done.

I really like this but maybe a tighter cropping (so that the subject, the fish, were a bigger part of the image and the background was less) would have scored higher.

Nice and sharp! You've found Nemo! Composition is a tad boring though being smack dab in the center, almost looks copy/paste. Perhaps offsetting the fish or having its tankmates (assuming there are other fish in there) in the frame as well would make it more interesting. Capturing the fish in midturn or feeding also helps to make the fish look more natural instead of a static image.

Great work on the selective desaturation. The focus and vividness of the fish are great. Maybe some cropping to make the fish a larger part of the composition may have been nice, but that's just my own preference.

Sweet. Perfect depth of field, wonderful contrast, and just an awesome focus on the fish. Rated 9.

The centered composition isn't working for me. The fish, although nice and colorful, appears to be floating in space. totally detached from its surroundings. The background looks flat--almost as if it's a black & white image propped up well behind the fish.

I love the level of detail you managed in your desat, but I wish the background was a bit more focused. The fish looks like he is floating in front of the background, rather than swimming through it.

Fun, technically very good. Slight improvement maybe by putting the fish off-center, to give the impression of a complete ocean he's swimming into.

This is great! i love the centred composition of the fish (nemo?), and it really stands out beautfully from the blurred background. THIS is what selective desat is for, and it's been used to wonderful effect. only thing i would add that isn't praise, is that it looks like it's hanging in air, not water. don't know what it is, but it's almost TOO perfect... maybe the lighting is a little flat? dunno, i still love it to bits. 9.

Found Nemo yet? LOL good one. I would have put the fish a bit off center though.
