The Spider and the Fly poem by Mary Howitt

i walked the 47 steps & sat in the grass...
and waited ..
i was hoping for a long legged fly but they werent landing near me ..
i noticed something very small in the grass that i thought was a spider with wings ..
when he moved i realised the wings belonged to a long legged fly which the spider had caught .. none of these details are visible to me unless i'm seeing them thru the camera & if i hadnt been sitting waiting for something else there's no way i would'v seen them .. they are very small .. the fly probably measured about 3/16" ..
some long legged flies are so skittish & incredibly quick that you push the shutter and the flash fires and they're already out'v the shot .. so you get photographs with an out'v focus leaf or piece of grass and some funny looking legs hanging down at the top of the frame ..
either this fly got caught in a web or the spider was like superman .. quicker than a speeding bullet .. !!.:)

ps.. i wonder if anyone noticed the web coming from the spider .. !!
in my slightly morbid & insect loving opinion this would have to be the best insect photograph i have ever taken ..
thankyou everyone for your excellent comments and votes .. :)

Yep definitely deserves better the 6th place, fantastic lighting and shallow depth of field getting the eyes just in focus, you must have had to work pretty darn quick as these guys battled it out.

Beautiful image Roz. I have never witnessed this before, and I like watching bugs. I've seen spiders catch their prey in webs but like this, never. I hope to one day. Ferocious, aren't they. Oz, bad place to be a fly. lol
