Challenge: Three Techniques (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Nikon D3
Lens: Nikon AF Zoom-Nikkor 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED VR
Location: Singapore Zoo
Date: Oct 19, 2009
Aperture: F8
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 1/100s
Galleries: Nature, Animals
Date Uploaded: Oct 19, 2009

The Mandrill (Mandrillus Sphinx) is the largest of the monkey species. Closely related to the baboon. Males average 55-60 lbs (25-30 kg), females about half as much (11.5-13.6 kg or 25-30 lbs). Unusually large males can weigh 110 lbs (50 kg)

The sole male at the Singapore Zoo, must have been my lucky day to have been able to capture this male with my 400mm. This image still went through a significant crop. Normally he is too far for even a 400 or 500mm. The lighting is also very low in his enclosure, making it an additional challenge.

Shot at ISO1600 , 400mm focal length , hand-held with VR on.

Clearly those colors are the result of an evolutionary process to compete with the peacocks, bird of preys, etc., in DPC challenges. :P

Absolutely awesome image, Andrew. Have you thought of offering/selling it to the zoo? It's the best mandrill portrait they'll ever see.

Dig those lips. This guy would make a great Halloween mask. I'm sure it is shallow DOF but its a little hard to tell without much of the bg showing.

Oh that is excellent. Intense textures and focus. I'd say bokeh, centered composition and tilted angle. LOL
