Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Planes, Trains and Automobiles (Advanced Editing II)
Camera: Sony DSC-F828
Location: Mall parking lot at night
Date: Jun 9, 2004
Aperture: 2.0
ISO: 64
Shutter: 2.5 sec
Date Uploaded: Jun 9, 2004

A tripod and camera were mounted on the side of the car approx 8" off the ground. Straps and cords were used to hold the rig in place. The car was then taken out of gear and pushed by 2 people in neutral, turning in a tight circle, while the shutter was tripped to achieve the motion effect. I elected to push the car instead of drive it to avoid engine vibration compromising the shot.

The shot was taken in an empty mall parking lot after hours. Time was about an hour after sunset with clear skies. The parking lot lamps provided most of the light for the shot, while the neon store-front signs in the distance, as well as the car's headlights, provided the colorful light streaks.

Post editing: VERY MINIMAL and basic post editing done here. Just levels, brightness, colors, and contrast. Some cloning was used in the rear window to remove a small decal. Otherwise, the photo appears as it did directly out of the camera.

What an awesomely beautiful photo - in my eyes, very worthy of appearing in a printed promo. And very courageous you are in your technique of mounting the camera the way you did. I wouldn't do it myself :-(.
Way to go - keep up the great work.

Wow! Thanks everyone for the kind comments. As a beginner who is constantly amazed by the caliber of photos on this site, it is such an honor for me that this photo has been so praised. The comments and feedback I've recieved in this challenge (and previous ones also) has really helped me progress through the learning curve. Many of the people on this site are a constant source of photographic inspiration for me, and I am humbled that many of these same people chose my photo for the ribbon. I look forward to the coming challenges and, with any luck, this won't be my last ribbon :) But win or lose, for me it's all about having fun!.... and what a fun time it's been.

Beautifully shot, good to see someone taking time to get a particular shot, well deserved ribbon. Personally, I would have toned down the tungsten lighting (yellow/orange) effect. Else wise, flawless.

Deep warm hearted Congratulations. Think: Your image has managed breaking the challenge barrier for this contest. This may be one of the most exciting car images in the photoworld of the internet and I am glad you did it in Dpchallenge. It helps to raise the bar even higher. Kudos! Upon seeing I suspected it would take first place, but then so did many others viewers.

I'll eat my head if this hasn't got a blue gif attached afterwards. It's expertly taken with some nice use of ND filter(?) and an incredible POV. Superb and virtually flawless with strong colours which I find very exciting. Could be a front cover of a motoring mag for sure. My untouchable [10]

In fact, I've now decided that this is one of the best car pictures I've ever seen and would have been well chuffed to have shot it myself. You may have gone to effort with the apparatus but since this is a marketable shot I think it was well worth it.

Very graphic! Looks like your camera may have been in danger here - mounted outboard as the car was moving/turning. Extremely strong!
